Right back atcha!@Killing Floor I would book a flight to Nashville. Go into both Gruhn and Carter Vintage. Whatever speaks to you on a deep level, come home with it. Walking into those two shops with ten grand to kill is the stuff of dreams. I would play all kinds of guitars and basses until something DARED me to take it home.
There's something special (to me) about holding and hearing a bass that resonates in a special way.
In those two shops it could be a Strat, or a Martin or Gibson acoustic, or a bass. How fun would it be to NOT know what you're buying until something just feels perfect in your hands? That's what I would do. The trip would be half the fun. Just get a cheap flight and don't eat into the bass/guitar fund with the travel expenses. Strut your happy butt into those two shops knowing you have exactly $10K to plunk down. In fact, if you know somebody at your bank, it would be extra fun to walk in with a briefcase full of 500 twenties.

I’d like to try out one of those Clarke Strat things. They look really fun.
And the best bass I ever had was a Kubicki. Paid for a semester of college with it but I’ve been halfway watching Reverb.
Love me some Nashville food! Hot chicken is at the top of the list! You're bound to be able to catch a good show while you're there too. I'm not seeing a downside.
This has all the workings of a perfect plan. My nephew in Nashville is a darn good kit player. He’s seriously better than some of the adults I’ve played with. And he loves to jam with the ole uncle. This is a solid plan.
First of all, congratulations. If you have the chops to back up an extremely good boutique bass, I'd get a Stenback and keep some change for a Wilkins, Suhr or Bluesman to use for regular gigs.
Remember that the higher fidelity the instrument, the higher will amplify your technique and flaws, so you are going to need a bit or practice to make it sound good. At least, I needed that with my MTD. At the end, you will be a better player.
PS: Paying off your mortgage is probably the best financial decision.
