Buy Me A Bass?!?

Sandberg VM5 (reverse P & MM) or TM5 (J & MM.)

Only reason is bc I've read they're great, can be had super light weight, and sound amazing in the demos I've heard. No experience with them, but do have a reverse P & MM bass (Reverend Mercalli) and love it.

Rest of cash can go to trip to Portugal with wife, and taking the train up and down the coast to hit the major spots. :)

And if y’all don’t give me any great ideas I’ll just get a Kenny Wayne Shepherd Stratocaster, bound and blocked, looks like a Jazz bass sort of. So technically it’s up to you to maintain the bass/guitar universal balance.

Remember that the higher fidelity the instrument, the higher will amplify your technique and flaws, so you are going to need a bit or practice to make it sound good. At least, I needed that with my MTD. At the end, you will be a better player.
PS: Paying off your mortgage is probably the best financial decision.

The boring reality is I’ve been known to buy a pedal and stick the rest of “found” money into debt such as mortgage.
I practice. I’m Ok. I’ve been playing since 78 so while I’m not Wooten but I’m not too clammy either. But you’re spot on that narrow frets and higher fidelity makes us sink or swim.
Still, it seems like a fun thread.

My wife doesn't like "Stuff" either. I had a friend stop by our house one day. He comes in looks around and goes "I thought you were married." I'll bet she has the first dollar she ever earned in her sock drawer.

As for your $10k budget, don't even think about buying a rare vintage Fender..

I recommend you compose exactly what you would expect this bass to be. Dream a little. Write down the features, materials, components, the sound you are looking for, what it will be like to play. Asking us to figure this out for you is a risky proposition.

Next, I would solicit opinions on luthiers here on TB that specialize making basses in your price range. Once you settle on two or three, then send them your specifications, as as well as the subjective qualities you expect on the completed product. Review pictures and or graphic examples and or art work in advance. Then cut your best deal.

It sounds like you have a lot of nice basses already. It also sounds like you're in your 50's or perhaps 60's with the house mostly paid and kids out of college?

Skip the bass and use that money to go on a really wonderful trip. European travel is very cheap right now and likely to get cheaper. I just bought round trip airfare to Europe for less than $600 per person. Is another bass going to bring you more joy than memories that will last the rest of your life?

Second this! Milan, plus a side-trip (bullet train) to Venice (and the islands) is really nice this time of year.
When in Venice, don't miss Peggy's place (with the best little cafe in all of Europe)
