Cabinet Stand

Here's my stand on a speaker stand. I built this for a gig I used to do regularly where I needed to hear myself in a fairly quiet environment - I really needed to be able to hear myself on axis of the speaker, and not have the thing get too high - as it was between me and the audience, a tall speaker would have been intrusive. Anyway, I built this angled stand which works two ways - at 35 degrees, and if you flip it around, at 55 degrees. It works well (it was designed this way) with the cabinet in the picture - a 110 (though a pretty big 110 - it goes down to 40Hz quite well). It also works well with a 112 I have (again a pretty big 112) if I'm playing a bit louder gig. Before you build something like this, you gotta know where the center of gravity is in your cabinet(s).

I used to run 4x10 cabinets and I set them on this onstage stand. It worked a charm, any loss in low end was offset by being able to hear myself a lot better. Also, there's a bass knob in the EQ.

This is an old pic, maybe 15 years ago. Since, I've moved to stacked 112s or 210s that accomplish the same outcome differently. Or IEM gigs with no cabinet at all.

But the onstage stand worked well and is still sitting in my garage. If anyone is in Denver and wants it let me know.

Something like this would work for my tiny two Trace Elliot 1X10 cabinets. I want something that is flat for
two cabinets. I can't find it online, only tilt back stands.

You have either misunderstood my intent, or didn't read it fully. My point is that I DO, and most of us here do care about our sound- but besides us, it really isn't something others notice so much, or really care about. I do not know a single bassist, or any other musician they uses a Db meter or any other audio analyzer on gigs. I HAVE seen Casino Pit Bosses, General Managers, and other sound police use them...

Most of these db meters that people get aren't good for much more than making relative readings. Aka, it was this loud last night now you're 2db louder. But they don't provide actual sound levels, at least not to any appreciable accuracy. To actually put a hard and fast number on it, meaning db(reference) like dbM or dbV, requires something more than a phone app or a $19.99 meter bought on-line somewhere.

Then those using the meter would have to have some understanding of what they measure and how the environment they are in affects that. Ask most of them what the d and the b actually represent and be ready for a blank stare or laundry list of stuff they parroted from the instruction manual.

So yeah, if some bar wants to establish a max level and enforce it by using one of those "db" meters, then that's their right to do so. But if the next door neighbor came over with a db meter and said you were in violation of some sound ordinance, then tell him to take his toy back home and call the cops. It will be the officially sanctioned "sound police" that have any say in the matter. And your neighbor better hope he knows what he's doing because he only gets one, maybe two of those calls if he's on the wrong side of the measurement. The cops may not even have a meter and just suggest you tone it down a bit.

DISCLAIMER: I don't actually advise telling your neighbor where to stick it if he has a noise complaint. Rather you should try to work with them to find levels and times that are agreeable to both. Being a good neighbor is usually better for everyone than being the neighbor who is technically in-the-right.

I would like to get something that would work with my two small Trace Elliot 1X10 cabs
with my Genz Benz Shuttle 6.2. I was going to get a Proline Amp Stand, but the distance
between the forks was almost as wide as the cabs, which are a foot square. I'm interested
in a folding step stool, 18 inches high. The best one on Amazon has a step (platform for my cabs)
that is smaller than my cabs. Someone asked on the page what the dimensions of the step
are and it is either 9X11 or 9X10.5, depending on who is correct. I would greatly appreciate
any comments or suggestions. I also considered a luggage stand, but that seems less than
stable. Here is the step stool I was looking at: https://www.amazon.com/Lightweight-Portable-Foldable-Bathroom-Non-Slip/dp/B0B4KRPM7Q/ref=sr_1_5?crid=39AHSB07JDBQG&keywords=folding+step+stool+18+inch&qid=1676499671&sprefix=folding+step+stool,aps,173&sr=8-5

Just to tout this “lifetime” foldable table for those not needing the slant, if the size works for ya...

Top is 29”x 19.5”, height 26.5”

They fold completely flat, and unfold super easily, not real heavy, but super strong... and only $27.

You can see two of them in this pic.

I ordered one of these, which I didn't know existed. Collapsible crate. They can be stacked if I want to go higher. Thanks for the suggestion.

I picked up one of these stands for my 112 cabs. Very sturdy, folds and carts easily. The only drawback is a very slippery top surface. A piece of bubble-wrap under the cab solved the problem, but I also ordered a very thin “pet bowl mat” that I cut to size - about 7 bucks. It packs within the collapsed stand. …works perfectly. Thanks for the link.

Ah, another person who possesses less than average reading comprehension. it seems some here truly, are ignorant of my level of knowledge. You're assuming you have 'more' knowledge than I do- or perhaps, it's a 'different' kind of knowledge. I shouldn't have to qualify anything. This is TALK bass, not pissing contest bass. I'm not an Acoustician, but I've been a Luthier, and tech for more than half a Century. Yeah, I'm old. So what? I did not 'dismiss' you, nor anyone else. My posts were NOT directed at any particular person. Go back and re read them, if you still don't get it. Playing the bass since 1967. I really do not need to qualify my statements to you or anyone. Have a great night!
You’ve been playing the bass since before I was even born!! (1968)

So much for a welcoming forum....

This is how we lose the experts. I've been on so many mailing lists and forums where people with expertise get chased out for no good reason. Passinwind has far more experience in acoustics and cabinets than most of us will ever have and I, for one, want to hear his input because whenever you move a cabinet around, including up off the flor, things change. Despite playing bass and being involved in audio since the mid 70s, I do not have that expertise.

I do not know a single bassist, or any other musician they uses a Db meter or any other audio analyzer on gigs. I HAVE seen Casino Pit Bosses, General Managers, and other sound police use them... to make sure bands do not exceed the Db limits. I stand by what I said. I spend more time on my sound at gigs than the other players usually do. Am I anal retentive? Maybe sometimes, I just know that even the most discerning band members don't know what bass I've brought to the gig. Most don't even notice that I'm left handed! I care. Maybe too much. I'm sure you do, too.

I don't want to get in the weeds here, but I frequently use db meters and frequency analyzers at bar gigs. It really helps to know what's going on and sometimes to get very loud guitar players to turn down a bit. AudioTools on an iPhone is a fantastic bargain.
