Cannabis

How did you not know that? I thought everyone knew that caffeine was a physically addictive substance?

You would be surprised, how many people do you know who have a coffee every morning? How many people have trouble going without it...

Most people don't know they are essentially dependent on coffee, its interesting how it is accepted by society too.

yea...........that heroin.......thats child's play. :D

Nicotine is more addictive than heroin, factoid! Although I wouldn't say it is more dangerous.

not sure how true this is but

As far as i know that is reasonably accurate, all the good ones are pretty harmless ;)

That being said, while a massive does of LSD or mushrooms isn't going to kill you, your actions while under the influence can.. not that it is likely, you will just trip balls and be more careful next time :P

As far as the physical effects that *just the drug* does to one's body - the toxicity of alcohol and nicotine, they far surpass heroin, which in itself (not counting a lifestyle change that comes from heavy abuse and severe focal shift *to* heroin in hardcore users) is not as extreme as many many many other substances.

yea, well, cigs and alcohol won't put you behind bars if your well behaved. try putting the hard **** in front of cops.

I don't have much doubt they will eat you alive if they catch you for it.

interesting that nicotine and caffeine are not on this chart. there is a list put out by the national institute on drug abuse (i believe). each year they compile data from drug overdoses. cannabis is always at the bottom of the list with zero deaths. even caffeine makes the list with several hundred deaths a year.

i see that nutmeg and datura made the chart, tho.

I dislike pot because of its social effects on people that I've conversed with. A lot of people I've seen/known smoking the stuff never failed to look slowed down, unable to hold a thought/conversation, or be totally unable to work on music with me during and after a "high". given the reasons I hear people do it (mostly social, anxiety, etc) I look at as a "low".

I realized just how much of a low it was when I got to see how pathetic my college roommate looked after I took him to a simple house party and he passed out underneath a table.

You're obviously hanging with the wrong people. Idiots are idiots whether their high or not. When they are, they simply become bigger idiots.

My experience with intelligent people who indulge intelligently is that they are still quite fun, interesting and capable. Different than 'normal', sure - but in a bad way? Nah.

Solid, intelligent people who understand their limits and don't abuse substances tend to maintain their core character in whatever situation they're in. If a substance causes a person to lose their identity and behave badly, it's their responsibility to not use that substance.

I haven't read every post one every page (got up to around pg 6, tho), so if this has already been mentioned, apologies for redundancy...

I've heard that part of the reason marijuana is a Class 1 Narcotic in the US was due to intense lobbying in the 1930's by cotton rope suppliers/manufacturers who were afraid that widespread growing of hemp (not 'proper' marijuana, hemp) would undercut their businesses, with the result being the 1937 Marihuana* Tax Act, which effectively criminalized the plant in any form.

* not a typo - that's how it's spelled in the Tax Act
