Carvin SB5000 / SB4000 Roll Call...Part 2!

They seem just fine - but I just don't like Ebony on non-fretless basses. Also, someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but Carvin uses heavily dyed ebony - which is the only way they can offer it so cheaply (Any other builder charges an arm and a leg for it).
Oh I see. I'm trying to get some ideas for a custom SB5000, so far I got Maple neck/Ash body.
My SB 5000 was supposed to have been completed by the last Thursday, but my salesman called and told me that they screwed up by not building mine with the Icon headstock I had ordered. Great. Another week to wait. I told him to tell the builders not to hurry, but please take the time to get things made well.

Maple Fingerboard with black dot inlays
Icon Headstock painted to match body

I agree. I think the SB with Alder + Maple board + J99As = incredible tone at a really reasonable price.
I just ordered a second SB, but went with the 5001 this time but still Alder body and Maple board, yes birdseye cuz I want to be fancy
I assume they'll replace the neck and reuse the body they constructed, so it may not be on the in stock page.
Yeah they'll just make a new neck for it and use the 'wrong' one on another bass. Bolt-on's are great from a manufacturing standpoint that way
How do these compare to a good Jazz bass. I'm really digging the looks of the white/tort comboz

I can't take it anymore, I am working on the spec's for my new SB bass guitar. I was thinking about getting it in black and styled like a Geddy jazz bass; however, I really loved that green bass with the gold hardware. I would never have guessed green would look that good.
Anyway, I am deciding if my first SB bass should be an SB4000 or an SB5000. I mostly play progressive rock and currently own a Lakland 55-94 and a G&L 2000. I was leaning toward getting an SB4000, but everyone is really raving about the SB5000 neck.
Can anyone tell me how the SB4000 neck compares to the G&L 2000 neck or the SB5000 neck compares to a Lakland 55-94 neck?

I was planning to get one almost exactly like it, just beautiful. Due to my current leaning to a more fat vintage sound, I just got a Fender Precision Deluxe 5 so I'm out of the market for a while. But when I next have money and need for a modern active Jazz, I'll be giving Carvin a call...
I've played both of those, but not long enough for them to stick in my mind. Seems like the G&L had a big neck? I can't remember for sure. In regards to the SB4000 and SB5000, I only spent a little time with the 4 but it was enough to kind of be surprised at how "meh" the neck profile was to the SB5000. I thought the SB5000 was the perfect neck profile for me, but the SB4000 had a completely different feel to it. So much so that I ordered another SB5 instead of the SB4000.
You know, if you don't mind eating shipping, you could always put one of the in stock models on your credit card and try it out to get a feel for the neck profiles. Have them ship a SB4000 first then ship it back, then ship a SB5000 and try it out. It's kind of expensive with the shipping and all, but then you will know for sure. Then you could either keep one or order a custom deal.
I've played all of these basses (some more than others...)
SB4000 vs. G&L: Depends. I find the SB4000 neck to be rather chunky for a J style neck. I've read it was designed that way by Seku Bunch. Not my thing. The G&L 2000 I had years ago had a very nice, fairly thin neck.
SB5000 vs. Lakland 55-94: First, the SB5000 is 34" scale, whereas the Lakland will be 35". Aside from that, this is really an unfair comparison: Lakland necks are the absolute shiz. That said, I liked the neck on the SB5000's I've played as much as the Sadowsky Metros I've played - and I think that's saying something.
