Carvin SB5000 / SB4000 Roll Call...Part 2!

This is a topic of much debate here on TB, but most will agree that with vol/blend you get a tad more pickup loading than with vol/vol (due to there being 3 pots involved in vol/blend and 2 pots for vol/vol). This means that there will be a tad more high end rolloff with vol/blend relative to vol/vol.

Personally, I am more comfortable with vol/vol, having toured for years with my Gibson Thunderbird. Vintage Jazz Basses are also set up vol/vol. But lots of players are more comfortable using a vol/blend, so I'd roll with whichever option you are more used to, and not worry too much about the tone differences.

The SB4000 I have is vol/blend.
All my two pup basses are set up this way.
I find it easier to tweak on the fly, for me.

If there's any loss of treble extension, it's certainly no cause for concern on this bass.
(or any of my others)
This bass, with the factory fresh rounds on it has wicked treble extension.
(this is good by me!)
It's easily tamed by way of the passive tone, and/or treble section of the two band preamp.

No worries. Get the controls you're most comfy with. I've played MANY basses in both configs (Tom and I constantly rib each other about it as most folks know). The diffs are subtle, and the ability to hear them is pretty dependent on pickups, amp, tone settings, playing style, and typical venue.

I do a lot of worship music and it's really nice to have the master vol there for fades without having to bring a volume pedal. Yeah, I know about the palm mute, but I don't like it as much, and I (personally) don't consider the v-v/v-b diffs enough to be concerned with. Highly subjective on that tho, as Tom says. :)

Yeah, I did the whole V-V thing for years, mostly because pan pots weren't being used... It was a hassle to turn down. Were I buying one of these babies today, I'd be V-B-T for sure.

Total hack job with paint shop, but this is what my SB should (sort of) look like when I get it. I so hope that Carvin posts a pic of it in their gallery when they finish it.

Here she is. Haven't played enough yet, but so far what I can see, hear and feel? Just incredible. The finish quality is superb, and the weight/balance is perfect. Seems much lighter than I expected (swamp ash) too.

Edges are actually more reddish than what appears in the pics (lighting was low). The color is honeyburst...

Love that Honeyburst finish - very timeless look.

I even see hints of birdseye on the headstock - nice.

Just noticed something. I routinely check the Carvin in stock page to see if any nice new SB's have popped up that I can't live without. Usually there are always 4-5 sitting out there in various configs. But today, I pulled it up and they are all gone. Not a single SB out there.

I wonder if this has to do with them being named Bass of the Year recently? I found it interesting.

That's not a back hack-job at all. Looks nice.

I "side by sided" a few SBs with MM pickup against the J p'up in the bridge position... I was hoping to hear what I hear on my Lakland 4-94 - that cool growl... The fact is, the J/J setup sounded better to me. I hope you dig the configuration you get - that's the risk with Carvins, you don't get to play before you pay (usually). When I'm ready to buy, I'm hoping that they'll just "have my bass" on the wall, waiting for me!
