Carvin SB5000 / SB4000 Roll Call...Part 2!

Yea I hear ya. I'm gearing up to save for another one, only this time around im getting the SB4001. I already have a SB5000. People say 5 strings make 4 strings irrelevant, I say 4 strings are a completely different animal altogether.

I honestly prefer 4 strings I guess. I got the 5 first tho because the neck did feel a bit better. That and I didn't own a 5 at the time and that thing is killer. Great sounding 5. I'm still very happy with it. Now its time for a chambered 4 for when i just want a comfortable, great sounding, light weight version of what I already have, minus a B string of course. 8P

My postcard said 1/31. I got an email saying it shipped on 1/26. Arrived on 2/2 (across the country via UPS ground).

Haven't seen this discussed really, but I believe the bridge pickup is in the '70s position. I'm curious if Carvin would route it out in the 60s spot; just under a half inch away.

This would be a huge plus for me, and i'd pay an extra 50 bucks or so to get it.

Well, I can't precisely recall hearing this discussed before, but to me the bridge pickup looks to be in the 70s position, .4" closer to the bridge than the 60s / current jazz bass. Also, since Sekou was trying to emulate his 70's ash jazz with the SB, it would make sense.

It looks that way to me in photos and based upon playing a few SBs at the Carvin store. Still really really like the tone, but would like to see an option for the bridge pickup to be moved a bit.

OH, and if you look at the current B40 and B50 compared to the older B4 and B5, you can clearly see that the bridge pickup has moved.

Ok, that makes sense... but could you do the measurement anyway? I mean the actual distance. I'd like to know what it is, and I won't have mine for a while.

My local UPS has my 5001, but they put an "adverse weather conditions" label on it so it likely not showing up today. It's supposed to ice over tomorrow. so might be a few more days before mine shows up.

Agreed (tho I never noticed it before, and am surprised at myself for not being curious about it to begin with), but I wanna' see if it's exactly the same or not.

nut or 12th doesn't matter. Just tell me which. :)

I have both Fender 60's and 70's spaced J's at home, so I have good reference.

Hope you guys don't mind me asking this here but this is apparently the Carvin SB info zone.;)

Anyway; today the wife has approved the purchase of a new bass and I have been looking really hard at the SB5000. But I have a few questions.

1. For those who have played both is there much difference tone wise between the SB5000 and the SB5001?

2. Would just doing the chambered option of the SB5000 be stupid for the price difference? I'm not much for flame or quilted maple and just wanted a solid colour but I'm sure my shoulder wouldn't mind saving some weight. I'd be at $1054 vs. $1224 for the chambered body option. A SB5001 in the most acceptable finish option would be $1410 which is higher than I really wanted to go.

3. I've seen some people say you should call your order in. Any advantage to doing that vs. just doing the order online?
