Carvin SB5000 / SB4000 Roll Call...Part 2!

Not open for further replies.
Just picked up the SB4000 in the classifieds here. Black with ebony board, black hardware and painted head. Already made some quick changes - black pg and black beauties. It's a true black beauty now.

Had it for 2 days now and lovin it. I really like the neck. Fit and finish is excellent. Tone is great and I'm still exploring.

Very Cool!!!!

WHEW!! Took me a few days of scattered reading, but I finally made it through this whole thread! I’ve kind of been in the market for a “Super Jazz” and I’m pretty convinced that my next bass will be a SB5000. I think my willpower was pretty much done by page 20 or so. :D lol I’m pretty floored by the tone even in the videos, and it seems like this bass sounds awesome regardless of whether it’s recorded straight in or through an amp.

I’ve been building different SB variations with Carvin’s Bass Builder, looking at different color combos and am wasting away plenty of time making mockups in Photoshop. I’ve got 3 versions (one with a couple color variations) at the moment that are all pretty different. And like others have mentioned... That green one from a few pages back is pretty hot too. I'll post mockups when I get a better idea.

Jarrett... Can you expand on “get a discount over the phone?” PM me if you want.

If I may interject ...

I've dealt with Carvin for years -

Never order just off the web site - Much, much MUCH better to talk to a human being about this. You can discuss details and pricing directly - If you're cool, you'll get some features cheap/free - and you can pick stuff that's not directly offered on the web site (like asking for a extra light body, that sort of thing). Better yet if you are in So Cal and will pick it up at the factory store - you *will* get a discount if you do that.

Hey - shouldn' t you be posting your Photoshop mocks for us???

Thanks for the tip about calling! I was planning on that anyway, but I really do need to settle on colors and such. Also, I'm in the middle of shopping for a new car, so ordering the SB probably won't be for a couple months yet.

Photoshop mockups... here's what I've got so far. I've settled on most of the features (gold hardware, ash body, maple neck, birdseye board, J99a's, VVTBT controls) but am still up in the air on actual color.

Here's the first two... I got fairly lucky and didn't have to do MUCH photoshopping, mainly the black pickups (the cream ones just don't agree with me). I think the first one was/is actually up in the classifieds here and I keep coming back to it. Just keeps grabbing me. I think it might actually be the same bass jzbass has as his profile pic. lol

And here's the other two, the two different color variations. I'm not so sold on this one, but I wanted to try. These just don't resonate with me as well as the natural one. I think it's because of the pearl/pickguard/control plate with the quilt... to busy like you mentioned a few pages back.

These two are rougher... I had to do a lot of cloning for the quilt/burst finish... no SB photographed with these color combos.

Ok folks, I'm in. Will be selling my Honeyburst Stingray 5 HH to fund my impending SB5000 purchase. I am very confident in the decision. All the praise, video, and clips have sold me 100%.

Should be able to pick it up with very little $$$ out of pocket too.

Here goes nothing!

What Harry said is spot on. Also, I have a Honeyburst 5001 stuck at UPS that is supposed to look almost exactly like the one one you mocked up.

Getting a little impatient with UPS though. They got it at the local UPS last Monday, but put "adverse weather conditions" on it and have sat on it since then. The strange thing is I have received other packages through UPS during the time it was there. Why weren't they held too? Starting to wonder if it might have been damaged in shipping or something and they are stalling. Any experience this before?

I would just go and pick it up.

They said I cannot. Said it either has to be a delivery attempt first or I have to contact Carvin and have them release it to me. Their customer service is closed today.
I think if you're the recipient, you should be able to tell them to hold it at the local UPS office. Maybe it's still at the hub and that's the problem? Anyway, sucks, but of course you will get it soon one way or another.

Sorry to hear it man, that's got to be frustrating. For the record I have the worst luck with UPS loosing my shipments and after 4 years in the same house my UPS man never ceases to drop my packages off blocks from my house.

Man Jarrett, that's gotta be hugely frustrating. Sorry that's being such a hassle... new gear, SO CLOSE!!!! :( I really hope it's not damaged, we've all read horror stories around these forums about that kind of thing. Make sure to keep us posted!

On a more positive note, I've been inspired for another mockup... I was lurking the Carvin forums and found a video someone posted of Andy Grammar, bassist is rocking a purple SB5000.

I really dig that look, I want to try a mockup with trans purple/blackburst over flame, white pearl guard and gold hardware. :) Got some things to do today, so won't be able to get to it immediately, but I'll post it here of course. ;)

fivestringgecko, man, tough choices, but if you want my opinion, while the blue and red basses look really cool, I do prefer the more classic looks of the first two, myself.

Yeah, that's pretty much what I thought when I got the mockups done too. I've got a few others that got the axe (pardon the pun ;)) without a second thought.

I think the purple/flame might be a nice combination... less "outspoken" than the my red/blue/quilt mockups. I'll see when I try it I guess!

Yeah, its a weird one. I watched on the way in. It got to the local office last Monday and said arrival scan. Usually the next day, it shows out for delivery. But in this case, the next day showed "adverse weather conditions" even though it was sunny and 50 here on Tuesday. It sat like that until yesterday, then another status updated came in and it came up showing "arrival scan" back at the Dallas hub.

Just got off the phone with them, they said its on a truck at the Dallas hub and there is no way to get it. To pour a little more salt in, its my 40th bday present that I have been waiting a couple of months for now :(

That's a great looking bass in the video. That guy is getting a nice warm supporting tone out that thing. Sounds great!
