"Check In" here before and after your gigs this weekend!

Eventful second set for me last night.

We were playing at this club that we perform at regularly, a few people in there and the first set went very well.

We got about four songs into the second and I noticed a horrible smell of burning. Then I wasn't getting any sound.

I looked around and there was smoke coming from one of the ports on my Trace 4x10! Needless to say, I pulled the lead straight away, then tried to carry on with just the 15" cab but I was getting no sound.

The song ended and I had a closer look. Whatever had happened must have fried the head 'cos neither cab could make a sound.

I didn't know what to do but then remembered that there was an amp in the little room just offstage which presumably belongs to the house band for their sunday night free 'n' easys.
I went and looked at this amp, thinking it would be a guitar amp and maybe I could at least make some sound from it, to salvage the gig.
Lo and behold, it was a little Peavy bass amp, so I brought it onstage (to cheers!), plugged it in and........this little 15" combo barked like a Rottweiler!

So after a three minute holdup, I was back in the game, we completed the show, to general acclaim.


Gawd knows what the deal is with the Trace though.
Obviously the head needs looking at, hopefully it can be repaired.
The 4x10 cab was smoking so I can't imagine that's too healthy.

Ok, I'm in the hotel room after the show, and it went really well. There weren't as many kids there as we had hoped, but it was still a blast, and Flatfoot 56 has one of the best live shows I've ever seen.

Had 3 gigs on the w/end. Two w/ 8 piece funk/soul band Sugartrain -one club gig Fri., & one wedding Sat. -we have about 250 songs so we can easily do both-clubs(public) we do more Sly Stone, James Brown, etc.. weddings/corporate-we do more 'easy' , laid back & "popular" numbers in the same vein-like- Some Burt Bacharach, Aretha, Disco etc.... Then on Sun. 7pm-9.30pm 1 w/ Black Coffee-Jazz & blues band. Nina Simone, Billie Holiday etc..
All 3 went really well-on Sun. gig we even got a "tip" from some poor soul who loved the band he went to great lengths to put $50 ina paper bag, seal it up REALLY well with sellotape write "to Black Coffee" on it- handed it to the barman who passed it on to us after the show . :-)
Those who know me on here know I'm a valve(tube) amp guy at heart & use 'em 90% of the time but also have grown to love the LMII I bought 18 months ago IIRC. I used this amp on Sat's gig with the 8 piece & it was GREAT!!!! HOPEFULLY it was a case of "grass is greener" where I used a 'new' amp & was struck by the sound-compared to what I'm used to. Otherwise it's gonna be HARD to justify carrying an extra 40 or 70lbs to each gig :-( That was the 1st time I'd used the LMII at a gig for Sugartrain. I'd used it at a rehearsal B4 only & use it regularly with the jazz band- with an EUB as well as electric bass Gtr. But it definately did better than ANY other s.s. OR hybrid amp I'd used B4. Surprise surprise!!!!

That is what I'd like to be doing in a few years....

So, we performed at the Los Angeles 5K run/walk last Sunday Morning. Arrived at 5:30 am for a 6:15 am start right in front of the LA Sports Arena. We shared the stage with KJLH radio personality Adai Lamar, who came up repeatedly to make announcements. What was really cool was we kept playing very softly during her stuff, and picked it right back up after she left the stage. First time for that.

I think our goofy band has special appeal to the mentally disabled. The joy on those few faces really brought a warm fuzzy to my soul, and afterwards I met the cutest little boy who wanted to play the drums. So we let him, and it was awesome.

One of our female singers made friends with Adai, and we got invited to the radio station to see Stevie do his morning show. I says Stevie who, she says Stevie Wonder. WOW!!!!:hyper:

People were asking for our business card, when these two guys give their business card to us. Rotary Club International is having a big convention in July and want us!!!!!!!!!!! Even bigger WOW!!!!!!!! No, I take that back. Meeting Stevie Wonder is bigger. Got back to the vehicle and found out I left the lights on, battery's dead. CRAP! Fortunately, the stage crew gave me a jump, we were out of there by 10:30 am. It was a very fulfilling Sunday morning.

My band is having it's first ever gig this Saturday, and it's going to be the first live experience for me also. The event is a local battle of the bands, we're getting 20 minutes to play 4 of our songs... now I know battles of the bands are a lot about your audience. That's why we've invited about 60 friends&family there. That's gonna be at least half of the club full of our supporters=)

Anyways, I'm pretty excited about it. Guess that excitement will die off a little just before the first song, but I feel like going into it for 110% when the time comes. Really looking forward to it :-D

I played a really popular club in my area. But the club booked too many bands. We had to go on first.
None of our friends were there who came a long way ...we knew they were going to miss us. We get there and one of the bands has taken over the entire stage! The drummer put up a 3 foot riser....they thought they were in Carnegie Hall! It was a joke...we had to literally squeeze in our amps. It was a brutal night

It was fantastic... we really had the largest fanbase of all the bands playing, and we actually won the audience prize! And our accordionist has won the "Miss of the old hoary rockers" prize:) Two guys out of four in the jury were older musicians and they liked our girl the most=) (the other two gave their prize to lead singer of another band)

I had a great time, played on some real amp (GK 400RB... sweet=) instead of my crappy Stagg combo amp:P The only thing spoiling the evening for me was my really, really crappy performance, the jury at the end told us we were actually interesting, but the technique of the rhytm section instruments could be improved (yeah, that was me, our drummer did a good job) well, guess I'll just have to practice more, and come out with less complex basslines. That actually puts something in mind... We won with the audience, but the jury screwed us because of my playing... This proves, that noone can really hear bass:P

Still, we came, we played, and we rocked. Our friends told us they really enjoyed the show, and two other bands gave us their phone numbers, so we can play with them sometime. One of them being almost local legend:) Yeah, I like this music thingie more and more:hyper:

Oh, and anyone here knows the band Opeth? I was told I look just like their bassist on stage:ninja:

Well..another gig that went down the Tubes fast..We were playing a rather large venue in CT...They overbooked the bands...6 bands in one night...it was a joke..we get there and the "headliner" ( and I use that term very loosely) took over the entire stage with no room for any one else...the drummer decided to use a 3 foot riser and it was 20 by 15 feet on an already elevated stage and boy did that suck for the other drummers they had to play next to his set...what a joke...there were cases everywhere ....amps, basses ,guitars, roadies, Moms....guitar stands , girlfriends...bass stands... Kids.....a partridge in a pear tree..you name it that stage had it..They should have renamed the club The Circus...and if you dont bring in a minimum of 40 people you dont get PAID....top this one please guys so I feel better!

Nothing like a live gig to show where improvement is needed. I've been there before, more than once... The good thing is, you have that "1st gig" behind you, and you have a better idea on where you need to improve.

Tomorrow I will be playing with Blue Eyed Grass w/ special guest Alan Jabbour...Mr. Jabbour is the former director of folk life studies at the Library of Congress...should be a fun gig

Thursday will be a song writter's night in which I was hired as the bassist for all 7 song writters.

I turned down two other gigs for this week because I'm busy student teaching

Yay for making music!

I'm working pretty much for free this weekend. I just got back from trying to pick my son up from college but my car died on the expressway in transit. $201 later, and my car is in front of my mechanics with probably a couple of hundred more about to be sunk into the car which pretty much negates 2 clubdates for this weekend

My new band just got a fill-in gig for Sunday.
It'll be my first gig playing bass in a whole lotta years (mostly been gigging playing ethnic percussion for quite a while).
I'll be singing a bunch, too. Should be fun.
The kicker is that we're hired for 3 hours, and we have about an hour and a half of material set.
So I'm guessing we're gonna do a lot of blues and rock standards. "Hey, you guys know "One Way Out"?
