Just as a datapoint...

Here's my string alignment and neck pocket fit. My strings are shifted just a tad towards the G side, but there's plenty of wood there. Never had the G-GANK issue on it at all (tho I HAVE on MM basses). To be honest, until this became a talking point here, I didn't even notice. Neck pocket looks great to me. And yeah, broken record time, but this bass just friggin' kills.

Simply no issue here - bigger strings swing bit wider, so a little extra "breathing room" on the fretboard toward the lowest string is a good thing. G strings don't throw the same amplitude as an E or a B.

Joe just likes to remind everybody - about every 5 -10 pages of this thread - why he doesn't like Jimmy's basses, and would never own one. Probably does it in other threads too... :hmm:

Sensitive topic guys,,,QC

Not saying this is the reason for some of what I'm seeing but....

When aligning stings a question comes up. Do you go with the center of the string or the out side edge? With thick string this is a real debate. If you center to center the leading edges are closer if you go the distance between the centers are further apart as the string thickens.

This same phenomenon happens with the edge of the board.

Also the real constant here is basses with the hipshot or BA because the bentplate has the grooves that you just move the strings over on.

Good point Andrew, that and the fact that the bigger strings swing a bit wider make me think that Jimmy's basses are pretty well thought out, giving room for multiple set up options vis a vis various string types and sizes, and bridge options. I've seen about a dozen of his basses now and they are very consistent in terms of string spacing and feel, even with different bridge styles, and strings choices. Not a "ganky" outside string - G, E, or B - to be found. I would bet that having the number of Jimmy's basses that you do (and possibly working on another :ninja:), you would tend to agree.

I just don't see a real QC issue here.

Machine work on the neck pocket looks dead on perfect; any tighter and the paint would be damaged from removal; All things considered, allignment looks perfect although the pup pole spacing could be a tiny bit off; one thing about a pocket this tight is that there is no "loosen the screws & give it a yank" adjustment, which is what I think is what is supposed to happen with hand made, one off, custom basses.

Are other manufacturers is the $3k-5k range able to hold tolerances like this, and, are all A/C basses this perfect?

Man I know what you are talking about. I had a Stingray 5 that if you tried bending the g-string it came off the board. Hated it. Not acceptable IMO. No more Stingray 5s for me after that.

My Stingray 5 does JUST THAT. It sucks! My LM5 does not have that problem whatsoever on the B or G string. Or Bb or Gb string in my case. :)

Cool, but I'm completely and totally unconcerned about it. I'm fairly sure that much movement won't really affect tone even if I could move the neck, which I really doubt I could (which is a good thing), and I don't notice it playing anyway. If anything, it might even make the bass just slightly easier for me to play by shifting the strings an iota closer to my hand.

this is talk bass right? being that now all bass manufacturer discussion gets done in these club threads, im just keeping the other side of the coin out there. i almost bought one sight unseen due to the overwhelmingly positive/gushing reviews. ive now played a bunch of these, i dont agree with it all. and i never even posted the qc issues i did see on the last batch of basses i played around 6 months ago.:smug: this string alignment thing is pretty minor comparatively.

i own two f basses and posted in the f bass club that i think the alain caron sig with the piezos sounds like butt.......that didnt go over that well:D

Open discussion is good. and no on is picking on you.. just trying to figure out what you find permissible.

When you say you trued a bunch of them .. how many is a bunch?

ive been to the shop a hanful of times and played whatever he had there at the time. id guess at minimum 10 maybe. lgs, lms, ra's, 4 strings, 5 strings, all that good stuff. so far the best bass ive played that was just killer was andrew's white lg4. worth the price.

and its all good.....i dont feel picked on:D

a lot of the issues wouldnt be issues if these werent at the price point theyre at. at least imo. my fodera came with glue seeping from the joints that was dried, a top mount jack instead of the side mount i ordered and aeros instead of duncans. not a big deal if i hadnt payed what i did.

The Real Question is........

Can I Rock a 10.75 lb Bass????

Aj

Or, can I rock an 8.5 pound bass?:D

Hey... Joe (Narud) is TOTALLY cool about bringing these points up. That's the beauty of Talkbass. I've taken my lumps also in various threads by trying to honestly talk about stuff that doesn't seem quite kosher (Narud and I are 'disgusted Fodera buddies', although they seem to be finally getting their act together).

Most of our A-C's ('our' meaning the guys on this thread who love them and have been playing them for 1, 2, 3+ years) are perfect, and quite frankly, I have a hard time playing anything else at this point.

The recent batch seems just a touch rough to me also (from the pictures and various reports from guys I respect and trust... Narud being one of them). Is that due to changing the spec's on the LM and being still kind of in 'prototype mode' for these NAMM basses? I have no idea, but based on the absolutely amazing build quality of the ones I've played (full honesty here... I've only played 'NY' made A-C's), my guess is, things are (or at least, will be) just fine.

However, TB is the BEST place to get, for the most part, honest reviews of stuff :bassist: I'm sure Jimmy C. is aware of these discussions, and appreciates the feedback.

IMO, as always:) I really do love these basses... I am a pathetic fanboy:p

What I didn't say very clearly was:
* What beautiful, precise, machine work
* On a high end bass, you shouldn't be able to move the neck as it would mean a sloppy neck pocket
* Was also implying that pup pole spacing was maybe a bit off - meaning spacing was off from manufacturer; just realize JC makes his own pups; oops
