VIC To be fair, while narud's comments can seem abrasively worded at times, I don't think those comments came from luthiers/builders that were that shallow and strongly agenda driven... in fact, I can almost assure you they weren't, because I might even know who said what. In fact, quite to the contrary, I've found most high end builders/luthiers to have more of a camaraderie than a bitter venomous competition like you illustrate here. I sat at a bar with George Furlanetto, Pete Skjold, and Carey Nordstrand, and a great time was had by all, and nobody was putting on faces... it was real.

Yep, And the pisser was I was the designated driver and was drinking Lemmomnade with a straw, while you were sipping Mac 15. Sometimes life is just not fair.

I will agree though. I think most high end builders appreciate what it takes to get there. They aren't too likely to knock product from the competition. I saw much the same with Mike Tobias at Summer Namm, and thank god I wasn't a DD that night.

I have had 6 Alleva Coppolos.. None had any imperfections.. except for the ones that i added to it..

$6040 for an LG custom (both prices AFTER reductions!)
I was really thinking of getting one until I found out the crazy price I would have to pay. but if I had, i would have been pretty pissed off to finy ANY imperfections!

It's true...Kirk's ''inflictions'' aside, my 2nd AC is a killer.
The action is set at just a little under 1/16 b/t the top of the 12th fret and underside of the G string with 1st position fretted.
Great killin' vintage J tone, subtle but effective preamp.
It's a nice tool.

My first one was just as nice, but it didn't have all the nicks and dings.

Yeah.. my new LG will be about 8.5 to 8.75 lbs.. perfect..
Tom Barney ( no slouch ) thought that the 10.75 could be more for him.. he wants heavy real heavy!!.. he and i had dinner on Saturday night and we talked alot.. he likes boat anchors.. i bet 15 lbs would still be OK with him and his chiropractor.

But really all that I can think about is

Typically better to stay on your own side of the pond when buying this stuff, or prices get nuts. You should see what TecAmp, Glockenklang, and Celinder cost in the US

I met Tom for the first time at NAMM this year, and he is one class act! Super nice guy, for sure.

As far as weight goes, I am probably more weight tolerant than most, but I've found basses that I liked (and didn't like) all across the weight spectrum. If anything, I probably own (and prefer, tone-wise) more basses that are slightly on the heavier side of average, but to be sure, I have played my share of super light (e.g., under 8 lbs) basses that totally rocked my world.

But when you carry around as much weight as I do to begin with, it really doesn't matter much to me at the end of a gig if my bass weighed 8 lbs or if it weighed 12 lbs. About the only bass that I didn't enjoy playing for three full sets was my T-40, and it was over 14 lbs, as I recall.

Bottom line is regardless of our individual feelings/opinions about prorities,Jimmy needs to be careful. That this thread has the tone tone of late needs to be respected.


He's a business going through expansion after a boom of success.This is a balancing act time period for any business.IMHO Jimmy's striving to be aggressive right now.When you go down the list of resent changes/expansion its really quite a bit. Weather or not that's the wisest of moves will be told in hind sight in the future.

all im doing is pointing out some stuff ive seen now that ive got some confirmation from other parties i trust. youd think i came on here and started talking about peoples mamas or saying your an idiot if you buy an ac. never did that. ive seen this stuff on basses not going to namm....

when i ordered my fodera, all the info out there was that they were perfect in every way and that they were the best crafted instruments anywhere. then while waiting for my order, i start hearing from mr o.g. gripe fest himself,scott reed, about some of the qc stuff he was seeing. i didnt believe him at all. there was no way it could be true. than i got my bass i still ended up owning and playing that bass for 8 years.

For me, the bottom line when it comes to this stuff is, if it plays good and sounds good, it is good. Whether it's a MIM Fender or a 6k Alleva Coppolo. What someone spends on an instrument is completely personal and up to them. If they can afford it, and dig it, then there's nothing I can say about that. Whether I agree with it or not. That includes any perceivable flaws that bass may have.

So much incredible music has been made on such a wide range of basses that, in the end - it's not about the bass at all - it's about the player and the music they have inside them. This is TalkBass so of course we all obsess over this stuff and there's nothing wrong with that. But let's remember that basses aren't the ultimate goal. They're a means to an end and we should play whichever bass speaks to us and enables us to create music on a higher level. A bass that inspires us when we pick it up, no matter what the cost or what flaws it may have.

That being said, I love Alleva Coppolo basses.

Yup . i had a T40 fretless in the 80s.. that thing was heavy.. yup! I agree...
But i was younger and had a much more in shape body back then...

Yeah, our "problem" was that we just enjoyed hangin' and chatting with folks so much, we took too long at each booth. Next NAMM we're gonna' have to be a bit stricter with ourselves about that.

Hey Guys,
I had another fun day hanging at the shop yesterday. I decided to get the BadAss V installed on my RA5 and I couldn't be happier! I feel it completes the bass, giving me the low end depth and focus I was looking for - I feel it's in a nice midpoint from an Ash body bass. I am really a fan of the bridge now and will most likely have it on my upcoming LM5.

And being the true pro he is, Jimmy even rounded off the top back part of the bridge so I don't accidentally cut myself on it. I think it also helps not make it look like it's running of the body.

And TB'er Miko Espanol got himself another fine instrument last night... Here's a fun pic of the "Weird Color Bass Club".

Well, I finally have a semi-decent pic of my KPB-5. I snapped the pic right before the first service this morning - it sounded great (even through the GK combo).

The first pic is the bass, the second is a comparison pic that Jimmy sent me - the other two bodies are Ice Blue Metallic.

That would be truly hot Vision! And it would also be more unique than the Natural you were thinking of. You should seriously consider it, IMO.
