Club Alleva-Coppolo (Part 13)

Hello to all AC players, I've had my lg5 for couple of weeks now and it's a really nice bass. But as much as it sounds great I've been having all along some minor issues:

A couple of days after I received the bass the metal bar on headstock popped out. The original screws are a bit too short resulting in shallow drill into the headstock. After examination I found out that the screws were just barely drilled into the wood and the force of strings under tension pulled them out. Of course it is illogical to screw the same screws hard into the wood as this would only lower metal bar, push string lower and thus cause even greater force. So I tried to find similar screws, only longer. Needless to say our hardware stores don't supply such small and such shaped screws, so I e-mailed Jimmy. The screws are supposed to be on their way overseas to me, but it's been weeks and I haven't received them yet. I thought maybe I could order screws on my own on web instead of bothering Jimmy. Does anyone know where can I order such screws? I did some measuring and it looks like the screws need to be:

diameter of head: 0.157"
diameter of thread: 0.120" ∼ 0.125"
length: 7/8"
head style: pan (or rectangular in profile) to fit the hole in bar

The other thing I noticed is related to pickups. Difference in height between neck pickup and bridge pickup is really obvious. Well that doesn't bother me at all, it's just that I also hear difference in volume between pickups; neck pickup feels slightly quieter than bridge pickup. It's not like day and night but it is obvious if I change pickup during song. I tried raising the neck pickup but it seems totally jammed so I just left it as it is. It is the same with bridge pickup. When I play normal finger-style, I position my right hand's thumb next to upper side of bridge pickup. During playing I seem to subconsciously press down on pickup with thumb and the other day I noticed that this side of pickup went down a bit so there is a gap between pickup and pickup's screws. It's not much at the moment but if the pickup keeps going down, what can I do to prevent it? There is no way to get to pickup from underneath so I can only pull it out, which is somewhat hard to do. I don't want to damage it. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

This is the kind of stuff that continues to make me shake my head regarding this brand at the moment. Amazing design, wonderful sound, etc., but man, how can a bass costing this much leave the shop without being perfect.

This is what quite a few of us were posting about earlier in this thread.

The good news is it sounds like minor stuff that can be easily corrected, but still:rollno:

+1
My bass also came with some issues. Sloppy qualitycheck before shipping is not good for business IMO

Both simple fixes:

I would just re install the bar with the same screws and screw it down another turn or so for better grab I'm sure it wont effect the tone and I am confident Jimmy doesn't have an exact science to how low the bar goes I lowered mine two turns as well.

To address the pickup issues just take the strings off then remove the screws for each pickup and pull the pickups out of the body. You just need to ad some more foam underneath each pickup to create more upward pressure OR you can ad small springs to the screw shafts but I like the foam method more.

jonno1707 thanks for advice! I will try that with pickups but for the headstock I would just feel safer using longer screws. When I e-mailed Jimmy he also said that the function of bar is to barely push strings down so that they lay on the nut nicely. He made it clear it's not meant to press on strings heavily.

Well not to rant on but I picked up an LM Deluxe 2 days ago and I have been playing bass for over 43 years professionally. I''ve owned and played the BEST.

This LM sounds decent enough..BUT that is its strongest point next to its beauty.
However, the bass is the heaviest I have ever encontered and NOT ONCE in life have I played a bass that hurts the leg ( pain ) that the bass rests on. EVER !
What's up with making beasts like that.??? I can see why older cats like myself and most cats prefer lighter basses ( SADOWSKY is very popular--hummh ?) -- One should play an instrument--not a beast of burden.

PLAYABILITY is so so. My 2 Custom Shop Fender Jazz basses ( Custom Classic 5 and Reggie Hamilton Artist 5 ) smoke the ALLEVA for playability and PLUS, what's up with the not being able to play the last note on the board without a struggle. So order a Reuben Rodriguez model--but did you see the price ($5100-last quote I got)

Maybe there are some nice pieces out there, BUT Jimmy is charging large and yes I agree--- there should be more consistency and quality control.

Overall I am not impressed with the ALLEVA 5 that I have and am disappointed considering all of the hype on this forum and from local players:bawl:

Maybe he's trying to be period correct with the quality issues.
You're handling it quite well though, I'd be PO'd. He's having to live up to a lot of hype.

Your concern is understood, but it doesn't qualify as hype. Jimmy is absolutely capable of putting out the magic. I'm sure if you played my bass, you'd understand why I froth at the mouth over it. :) My LG5 is absolutely dynamite, and it only weighs 9 pounds, which is perfect for me (and yes, weight is a big deal with me too). It just seems that he's letting a few things slip right now, and yes, that shouldn't happen. The good news is, I'm pretty confident the thoughts shared here are trickling back to Jimmy, so hopefully he takes the appropriate actions moving forward.

And to your weight concern, being fairly heavy IS period correct for a late 70's J, BUT, I very much feel he should offer a lighter fare for those willing to forgo that extra bit of "correctness" for the sake of comfort. I know I would.

dude its hype. its the internet, it happens. :D remember when matt power (jacochops) started posting about carey and everyone started ordering fodera inspired customs? then the nordy came out, orders ensue. ken gets an a/c, proclaims its the next coming of jesus and t/b gets all a twitter.

my personal view is that there is no real magic. its a guitar....its up to you to make it happen. some just get us there in a way we prefer more. at 5k, if its absolutely perfect, than its just doing what its supposed to (which it better for that price).

It all boils down to this, ultimately. Sure, some guitars are better than others but if the player doesn't have it...

When compared to phrashing, technique, feel and other intangibles, the bass is a relatively small part.

That being said, this is TalkBass - the one stop shop for gear heads. Nothing wrong with that, either.

Well, maybe I'm being too specific, but to me, hype has connotations of being agenda driven and/or at least undeserved praise, as opposed to truly deserved praise. While Jimmy has had some problems as described here, the praise he's been given by at least myself and Ken are well deserved.

I'm not the greatest bassist in the world, and never will be. Truly, I'm just competent. BUT, I've been through a LOT of top basses over the years, so I know "the good stuff" when I see it, hear it, and feel it.

That said...

IMHO, that's only 1/2 true. Otherwise we'd all be playing $50 Sam's Club specials.

You're absolutely right the bass is nothing without the player, but I also firmly believe there's a certain quality level that more often inspires the player to really become one with the instrument, and truly enable them to play more freely what they feel and hear in their heads with less distraction. I personally think all tools in all occupations can have this same attribute, though with basses, and this is the tricky part, it isn't strictly reserved to the high end. I've played straight up J's that stand up to the best stuff out there.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not into palm readers and such, and I know full well even my LG might be a "meh" to some guys, since this is such a subjective thing. I'm just saying a luthier, like a musician, is an artist and a craftsman. If they get it "just right" it really does result in the whole being greater than the sum of the parts.

IMHO, anyway.

However, the bass is the heaviest I have ever encontered and NOT ONCE in life have I played a bass that hurts the leg ( pain ) that the bass rests on. EVER !

My LM is 10.75 lbs it is certainly not the lightest bass I have ever owned. I'm on the fence with regard to the weight as the bass sounds and feels great. I certainly don't prefer the weight but mine is not heavy enough to hurt my legs:eek:

My Sadowsky NYC is heavy too.. 10+ pounds... and not what i expected for a bass with price of almost 4 grand.. non chambered.. and the sadowsky is a smaller dinky size too.I now know to order Lightweight when i order a bass.. My other NYC is 8.5 pounds on a 5 string.. just right for me.

My Allevas are all 8 to 8.5 pounds. But I specificily order lightweight Alder or ash or pick it out myself when i am in LA... Thats not Lower Arkansas! lol.. Its a Texas joke...

Now, World class player Tom Barney specifies the heaviest wood that Jimmy can get.. and i mean Boat anchor heavy. Playing his bass made my shoulder go numb... But he loves it like that...
I have a new prototype 5-string coming from jimmy which may weight 7.9 pounds DN board Oly White Blocks /Binding and my new LG5 is about 8.5 pounds with a full size un chambered body in Sonic Blue with DN board dots /Binding.. But I spec that low weight...

Bassarama, which LM5 did you get? The Gold, Natural or Trans Red one? Those were the 3 NAMM prototypes... Just curious.

:smug:I got the GOLD.

In spite of my whining and wimpering and numb leg this morning THIS BABY is off the hook.

I recorded this afternoon with it against some other great basses ( 72 Jazz, Ken Smith 6, Fender Custom Classic 5, Custom Artist RH 5 ) and the ALLEVA wiped them out.

ODDLY, now that the bass has settled down ( I tweaked it and it is very warm weather here today-action is GREAT, AND old strings still ) it plays and executes all of my ideas BETTER than all of the basses.:bassist:

I played many styles and the ALLEVA kills from finger to slap without even as much as a sweat.

WEIGHT, I can live with if a bass sounds this GREAT.
I''l just have to increase my workout routine.

YUP I am 360 on this bass now.
All of the hype and kudos I have read have finally been jusitified. She is a keeper. I do I do;)

And by the way SHE IS A BEAUTY..see her on the ALLEVA site under LM Deluxe 5 in all her glory !!:hyper:

Well, that's great!... for you...

Problem is, most people don't get that kinda' access and those kinda' options. I know I've spoken to Jimmy a few times about getting an LM built that would net a 9 pound max final weight and he basically told me there wasn't much chance of that (when in fact I know there's plenty of ash out there that both sounds good and also doesn't weigh the usual ton even with his full body sizes).

Now to give him his due, I'm sure if I pushed him, he'd manage to find something, but I still got the impression it'd be really hard to hold it to 9 pounds... that he'd "try", but not really be able to give me any assurance. I understand his tonal goals and intentions, but as I think we're seeing here, there's a LARGE market of folks that aren't willing to put up with the super heavy basses... because we shouldn't have to anymore... as proven by lots of other basses... including some Jimmy has built himself (and apparently is now building for you). So why did I get the distinct impression from him that'd be such a problem?

I guess my main point is, I really feel he should be offering the same things to all his customers that he seems to be offering to you and Jason, and it doesn't seem that's the case.

when i was considering getting a bass from him, he would tell me he would build me a 20 pound bass if i wanted, but i would try and get him to give me an assurance it would land in a specific weight range (11 pound area) i couldnt pin him down at all. the lm's were still in the 9 pound range at that time. now all of a sudden theyre all heavy:eek:

id get the same thing when id ask for a price.. "so whats the price of an lm with x,y and z specs?" the reply... "start saving". me- "no really whats the price?" response "alot" ugh:help:

haha dude I used to get so annoyed when Jimmy would do that....I asked him to make me a LG5 (back when that was pretty much the only model) and asked how much it would cost to add blocks and binding and he would NEVER give me a straight answer!! Just, "oh that's gonna be a lot", or "are you sure you wanna do that"....annoying! It actually turned me off from buying a bass from him! I sent him a full blown list of all the options I wanted, only to receive an email of "a lot of these options are gonna be expensive"....with no price quote or time frame....I eventually decided not to have him build one for me cause he just kept jerking me around....a shame cause I LOVE my KBP5 and I could've gotten that LG for $2800 back then!
