Honestly, my favorite sound is just the passive KBP5. I think Jimmy really nailed that early CBS P-bass tone and it just translates unbelievably well from the wood and construction all the way through the electronics. His pre IMO, is really just a more powerful vintage passive sound so it's great to have live if you're still aiming for a more vintage tone like Paul does with Jamiroquai. The aguilar to me sounds way more like an active bass but I loved the bass control on it....super fat....but not as authentic jazz bass as the AC, so it makes sense Paul would slowly gravitate towards it.

Interesting to me that the boutique P models (Nordstrand, A-C) tend to be passive, while the J's tend to be active. I guess there really isn't much value in widening out the inherent tone of a P (versus a J). Hard to improve on the passive sound of a P with a preamp IMO.

I have a PJ5 and that thing sounds fantastic passive soloing the P. Plus, most of the P's I've played, I've found myself mellowing out the high end, so the buffering provided by the preamp, where high end tonal preservation is probably the most noticeable benefit, is kinda' moot. Plus, like you said, the P sound just simply doesn't need anything. That's the beauty of that series wound offset split coil design. I've played active P's before, and even my PJ5 in active mode, and I can't recall ever using any EQ with the P pickup at all.

I recently acquired a '74 ash/maple Precision in a trade, and I have to say, this bass just sounds flat out killer through just about every amp I've played it through. :bassist: :bassist: :bassist: :cool:

That's true! That is a killer bass, which for the uninitiated, is an active-only setup. The 5-string ash/maple Celinder P-bass I had for a while was also killer, but I found myself favoring my Sadowsky P/J 5.

I dig Jimmy's pre, and like to have live options on-board, but I still like my LG best with the pre bi-passed. Something about the 'center' of the instrument's tone ... that gets disturbed. Don't know how else to put it. This is of course not unique to Jimmy's pre, but to on-board pre's in general IMO for vintage Fender sound.

+1 Especially with the more 60's 'vintage' spec of the LG, the buffering an on board preamp adds to the tone (i.e., that widening of the low end, smoothing of the mids, and 'sparkling up of the top end), kind of goes against the inherent nature of what those basses sound like (kind of sucks the growl out of them just a bit). I too rarely use the preamp on my LG, although of course the LG with pre engaged sounds wonderful in its own way.

On the LM, it is a totally different thing for me, and the buffering seems to work WITH the inherent voicing of the instrument (maybe my ears have been trained given all the souped up 70's J's that guys have been playing for years, with heavier bridges and preamps). I NEVER play my LM without the preamp engaged, although at most, I boost the bass just a touch... maybe 10%).

No, YOU'RE killing me with your posts! Every time I get a thread update notification, and it's you, I assume/hope it's an "LM update", and my heart skips a beat. I CAN'T TAKE THIS! ;) :D :D

Vic there is bad news on the LM5........

After the initial period of getting used to the bass, tooling around and such. My interest in talkbass has dropped off significantly.

I think that in and of itself says a lot about the LM.

haha that's true I miss you Pete! :crying:....even when I'm in love with all my gear I still always find my way back to TB :D
