Heard a funny story about that tour.....

Clapton didn't like Pino's tone "too dark" asked pino if he could brighten things up a bit. Pino said I've been working on this tone for 20 years... basically "no"

Short story,,,Pino out,,,Weeks back in.

Interesting! I respect Clapton even more now! I always feel sad hearing what Pino's tone has become now versus the glory of his tone in the 80's. His work with John Mayer sounds like mush to me (although the notes and feel are great). Long live Willie... he's a great example of how you can maintain an 'old school' vibe without totally compressing and darkening your tone.

That's going to be quite a bass!

Very cool. I don't know the whole story on the bass but I would love to know more.

I wonder if the goal of the bass was to give Willie the feel and look of the P basses he loves with the clarity of tone of a jazz bass........ maybe in an attempt to not be "too dark"... not sure if the time line lines up, or if that was the reason for this combo, but it sure would be a cool story if it was :)

I should get the bass today, still has the strings on it from when Willie was using it...I'm sure they are dead by now. I'll resting it and it give it a whirl today and let you guys know what I think.

All my other basses are passive (including my Fodera Garrison) so I really hope I dig the preamp. From what I have heard here I think I will.

So, do I get a number? :D

Very nice, Ryan! You have some bad basses, dude. I've drooled over that bass more than once on Jimmy's site. And with Willie playing it? Wow... A great bass for sure.

Also, I guess that says something for where Pino is at in his career that he can pass up a tour with Eric because he didn't want to compromise his tone. Must be nice!

Good for Pino for standing his ground.
What if Micheal Jackson had asked EVH to change his tone for the solo in 'Beat it'?
Besides, Clapton still got a monster player. That would be the equivalent of someone turning down Clapton in favor of Beck, either way you still win. [/B]

Now for an interesting AC dilemma - do I use my LG or KPB for a cover of Layla?

We're having some additional fun at church lately, doing guitar centric openers before the service starts. We have two of the best electric guitarists and one of the best piano players I have ever played with and that really opens some possibilities. Last weekend we did Jessica by the Allman Brothers, next week is Samba Pa Ti by Santana. I wonder what is next...

Anyway, listening to the recording it *seems* to be a jazz bass on Layla but I'm not totally convinced of that. Any suggestions?

What's cool about that JJ with a P body up on the site is with the dark pickguard it's not really obvious. I am really starting to dig the idea of a P body after getting some confirmation on the comfort. I wonder if the J pick up will change the balance though.

The Clapton.de site. It's all in German so I couldn't navigate it all that thoroughly, haha.

The one site I would keep an eye on, though, is whereseric.com. Probably the most thorough fan-site out there. They have an extensive photo gallery of each show that is undergoing a big overhaul right now. When it's back up, I'd check through the gallery. You could probably turn some up there. :)
