I do understand what you are saying there. It takes it from kind of 'funky and old school' to more 'finished and high end'. Again, really subtle, but I guess not the 'no brainer' I originally thought.

I think it also would vary by the type of guard. My 'light mint guard' would IMO actually look a little nicer to me with the simple black 'line' extending all the way around. The white with the tort 'jumps' a little more.

I still think it would be a good thing for Jimmy to do though.... that current 'cutout' is pretty 'rough' looking.. but to your point, it does kind of go with the 'old school' vibe... never thought about that before.

There is a beautiful picture of a bunch of new Alleva's in this month's Bass Player, FYI.. in the 'Bass Day' section (page 40). There's an Olympic White with tort, RW and matching headstock that is just killer in an ad with Paul Turner on page 51. Nice!

Can we see a full length pic of the bass with the upgraded pickguard?
I would like to see a more complete pic before I make a decision, but I think the beveled edge is gonna be an improvement! Granted, my "old school" non-beveled PG makes me "old school" and better than everyone who has a newer beveled one, so I don't think I'd trade for a newer guard.

actually i think it is tommixx...i actually was the one that put that PG on the bass Wednesday night before the show out here in LA...
It looks nice!!!! I dont remember playing the bass though.. I have not had sleep in about 2 days.. I was invited to dinner with Jimmy that aguilar put on... real nice time.. great food. and i am so thankful for the hospitality.. but im beat tired... I will try to take some more pics of that bass tomorrow..

Met Jimmy C. and played Kirks P5. AMAZING! Jimmy and I need to talk some more. His basses are just fantastic. Also played a blue jazz and another P5 with flats. These things sound like true old school P's and J's. FANTASTIC!

Kirk is such a great guy and I was so glad to finally meet him.

got to play some ACs for the first time yesterday................

can't describe it really. if you've ever been a fan of a Fender, this will redefine "Fender" or at least everything you wished a Fender could be. If you're a 5 string player and dream of the most comfortable thin but not cramped neck to play that feels almost as good as the nape of your wife's neck while slow dancing then yes, you will love the shape and feel of Jimmy's necks.

truly, all of the hype and then so much more is well deserved of these basses!!!

sorry to gush but they reeeeally impressed me. and Jimmy's a great guy, even for being Italian and all :eek: :hiding: :D:D:D

I kid, I kid, I don't wanna swim with the fishes Kirk really!

oh ya, and Kirk........ well......

The A-C really has pretty much eliminated my bass G.A.S. (to the point where I sold a custom made J I had on order the day after I got it). As you found out, these basses really are 'the best Fender's ever' in a lightweight, uber quality 5 string active version that still sounds vintage... whew! I haven't played anything like these before.. weight, feel, tone, everything.

I like mine so much I don't even have G.A.S. for another one. It's just perfect:bassist:

Edit: Sorry for the giddy tone of my post. I've had this bass for quite a while now, and it still gives me the smileys every time a play it!

OK, when I'm wrong I fess up. Seeing the new pickguard versus the original in the NAMM Alleva booth picture thread, I'm with you... that original cutout is just part of the look of those basses. I'm keeping mine 'as is', even if the other guards are made available.

It's funny... I thought it would be an improvement, but it does suck a little of the 'classic vintage' vibe from the bass (especially the tort guard). Minor deal, but I'm with you!
