Club Fbass (thread 12)

As I read about the typhoon devastation in the Philippines, and that as many 10,000 people are thought to have died and many more left in dire straits, I cannot help but wonder and worry about my friend and Club Fbass member: Karel Honasan.

Karel, I hope that you and yours are safe and you are in my prayers. Hope to hear from you soon.

o Karel makes his wedding vows with the help of his Fbass BN5.

o Karel plays his Fbass BN4 at NAMM 2012.

o Karel and Alain Caron jam in the Fbass booth at NAMM 2012. (BTW, that's my bass Alain is playing).

You guys just made me drool over Buckeye and Cocobolo. Quit GAS'ing me - parts and materials ain't cheap.

I've passed along all of the birthday wishes to George and he is ever grateful! He's been on a much needed vacation and has been without an internet connection for some time. He's due back in a couple of days.

Congrats Randy I can't wait to see more progress pics. Is this the first ash neck F bass? I always wondered what a ash neck BN5
would sound like.

Randy's Ash neck is the first we've done as a neck-through, however, the first Ash neck was ordered a couple months before his as a BN5 Chestnut topped build. It's being sprayed as we speak so we'll be sure to report back when completed.

The Ash produces more of a scooped midrange with very tight low end and clear high end presence. To bring some mids back in we're using Alder body cores.

Couldn't believe the projected numbers the day after either. We've been in contact with Karel who's situated roughly 900km north of the devastation in Tacloban. Besides enduring strong winds and storms, he, his family, and friends are all ok.

Thanks so much my brothers!!! :) knowing that there is abundance of prayers coming from you guys fills my already hopeful heart with more confidence that we'll be ok :) thanks again so much!

And it's not 'just' prayers.
I'm not sure how well international news is getting through to you but it might help to know that aid groups from around the world are scrambling to help.
Even my son's school has started a campaign to buy water purification tablets to be sent with an international aid group to your country. A rescue team also flew out of Johannesburg a few days ago to help - and that's only from my country.

Not sure if this has been posted yet.

FBass is holding a free bash/jam tomorrow where Alain Caron will be there. It's at a bar/club (in Hamilton) that is free for all to come!!

FBass is also offering a free setup for any bass you bring. There will also be new FBasses for us to test drive!

PM me if you would like details/addy for event or go to FBass.com and click on Bash event

Tried the regular forum for this and got 0 replies, so--
I have a BN-6 that I ordered with the master vol., and it seems I am not able to get the "burpy" tone that I crave, and got with my vol-vol BN-6 when I backed the neck pick-up down about half or so (as was the case with my Fender Jazzes when I played them) Has anyone here gone back to the vol-vol for this reason and did it satisfy you? Also how hard was it to do with the détente knob? Did it have to be replaced by a regular pot? thanks in advance.

I'm not the best person to answer this, but at least I can get things started for those with better answers.

Three things come to mind.

First, one of the reasons I don't like a master volume is the pan pot takes out highs unless it is exactly on the notch.

Second, basses that pan between two pickups are not as tonally flexible as basses with vol-vol controls. In fact, there are just tones a pan control cannot dial in that a vol-vol bass can. For example, while a pan control can get you a 70/30 tone, it cannot dial in a 70/50 tone. Mathematically speaking, you can dial 8% off the center notch to kind of get the same ratio, but sonically speaking it isn't the same tone. Besides, even if it was, 8% is hard to get right each time.

Third, it is my understanding that the positioning of BN6 pickups may have changed over time. If your old BN6 has its pickups in a different location than your new BN6, then replacing your vol-pan controls with vol-vol may not give you what you are looking for anyway.
