How does a satin finish allow such a significant price reduction?

The difference isn't just the satin finish, as Joey said. In short: you can order an NYC pretty much any way you want. With the Satins, you're limited to a range of solid colors (looks like 9 ATM, a nice range). Also, you're limited to either alder+rosewood or ash+maple: can't do alder+maple (a favorite of mine). Can't order upgraded body or neck woods, no P or WL styles, no choice of pickguard. You get either standard J or modern 24 -- so, can't order a PJ, or a 24-fret bass with anything other than the modern pickup configuration. Etc.

All told, this makes the build much easier, which results in a very nice price for an NYC.

In 2009 and in 2013, we were hit with all of our maple containing "Cambium Miner" or "flek". These are caused by an insect in the tree and the tree fills in the voids left by the insects, resulting in these blemishes. I literally had to dump a few thousand dollars of wood several times due to this. I went through every maple neck blank supplier I know, both in the US and Canada in search of cleaner maple. At the time, this was the best wood we could get.....fortunately, we have been "Cambium Miner" free for the last three years. Next up is the ash beetle, which is devastating ash throughout the US.

When grading lumber, this is NOT considered a defect. I then had to change my standard from top grade to "billiard grade" with my suppliers, with more than a 100% price increase.

Red list: ash trees and antelopes on the brink of extinction

“Our activities as humans are pushing species to the brink so fast that it’s impossible for conservationists to assess the declines in real time,” said Inger Andersen, IUCN director general. “Even those species that we thought were abundant and safe – such as antelopes in Africa or ash trees in the US – now face an imminent threat of extinction.”

Just out of curiosity, is the prewired preamp assembly only prewired but precisely the same as the hand wired one, or it features the same design with different electronic components?

Same preamp found in all basses and pedals
