I've got a conformation from Hans Peter Wilfer this is indeed a brand new German bass, not a NAMM show bass.

I recently upgraded the preamp with a John East Uni-Pre and it has completely transformed the bass. I found the stock Sad preamp to be 1 dimensional and scooped but the uni-pre is far more versitile.

Congrats on the bass, but I'm confused that you found the bass mid-scooped, being that the M5-24 is the most mid-forward, 'Ken Smith-y' model in the lineup. Your ear's are king of course, but still.

I could see myself owning another ash/maple M5-24 down the line, via the Wardowsky arrangement.

Sadowsky flats are my hands-down favorites on 5-string fretless - happy use on several different basses, over the last 6-7 years. Have not yet tried the new formulation, but have two sets of them stashed, one of which is destined for a fretted 5, sometime this fall. On strings I'm more of a DR guy, but the Sadowsky flats are really special - the Goldilocks of flats, on tension, timbre, etc.

Yeah, “scooped” is not a word I would use to define the sound of the Modern. When it comes to the slap sound I wish I could get mine to sound more scooped. :D

Yeah, that was the one sticking point for me with that model:

Fingerstyle: about the best I've ever heard. Low-mid rich and sits underneath other instruments in a special way

Slap: where'd the beef go?

Similar problem with my PJ5. I'm not a 'J-bass' guy until I need to slap, and wish an ash/maple MV5 with single coils would magically appear.

The Modern is magic in a mix when played fingerstyle. I often play mine in a twelve-piece band and it sits perfectly. The FOH guy loves it and is disappointed if I show up with anything else. The VTC alone gets me as much tonal variation (slap notwithstanding) as I need with the Modern (that said I’m not someone who looks for a ton of tonal “versatility” in my basses). Best B string I’ve played on a Sadowsky as well.

Exactly the same experience. Nowadays ... if the job holds up and since the Warwick partnership ... I might just be able to have one in the stable again. The neck pickup soloed with VTC rolled off (and for that matter, the neck pickup slapped with VTC on) was often times 'close enough' for a true P-adherent like myself. Crap. Talking myself back into one.

The 'one I should'n't have let go' was the mahogany body-ziricote-RW fretboard Modern I had a while back. It was definitely darker, and I was searching for 'bright and tight J slap' at the time ... but that pickup setup with 'darker' sounding woods is something I'd like to revisit.

My Modern has the same specs, except the top is cocobolo. I love it. You should definitely get another one. :woot:

I have a Modern 4 banger and it’s an absolute beast. I also use Darkglass pedals for tone shaping and mild breakup. The Modern just cuts through and is a fantastic bass with a killer tone!

Yes, I got the Standard JJ4 too that’s my number 1. But, I enjoy both flavors. And, have a 3rd flavor in the works. Can’t go wrong with a Sadowsky.

I would defer to 'the guy in an actual Journey tribute band' ... but I've gotta think that 'Don't Stop Believin' sounds amaze-balls on that Modern 4. That's one of my favorite, bridge-pickup snarly bass tones ever.

The preamp has got some MEC parts in it. So maybe they are build by MEC now, of course to the exact specifications of Roger.

Yes I'm very happy with it. It took me a while to get the setup the way I like it. Changed the strings (Sadowsky Blue Label Steelstrings 045-130T) to the bright nickels SBN40B. Much better. Doesn't sound exactly like my Fender PJ, but more neutral with more (possible) lows and highs, if you wish, controlled by the VTC. But still sounds the way you would expect: Round, warm and full in the P-position, Jaco-like in the bridge position and a nice rock sound in the mid. It's all there: from Motown to metal, from jazz to funk and from reggae to rock and roll. This weekend i'm gonna use it with my band Generate. We play rather heavy symphonic progrock and we are working on some new songs.

Absolutely, and there are several more songs that the Modern totally nails that tone!
