Wow Tom, that is a beauty. I've played the YYS I and it was a blast. So growly and percussive. It's hard not to want to go nuts slapping on that thing. I also played one of the "New Standards" from about 20 years ago that had EMGs and a Haz preamp. I don't know the story on those basses but it was a bit different than the YYS I but essentially had the same vibe. Slap and staccato playing just had notes flying off the fingerboard. So much fun.
Anyway, I haven't posted in this thread in a long time but I'm back in the support group.
I’ve owned a number of basses over the years starting with my first electric, a beat up Guild B301. Carvin, Fender, EBMM, Lakland, Lull, Pedulla, Fbass, ACG, Rob Allen, Zon, Warwick and a number of others I’m forgetting along with all the other basses I’ve tried out over the years. But once I got my first Stambaugh I had the bug.
For me there’s something really addictive about being able to completely design a bass from the ground up – woods, electronics, shape, neck profile, radius and pretty much any other aspect. Chris is about as custom a builder as any and his necks fit my hands better than any I’ve ever played and are rock solid and stable. I’ve owned a few from him now but I’m down to three. I’ve now got a hollowbody with a really vintage thump, my version of a 70’s Jazz with SS rounds, and my take on a modern P bass (wenge neck, Aero custom pickup) strung with TI Jazz Flats
So, having moved a lot of gear over the last year and saved up some gig money I decided to get what I hope are my last two basses. A modern NT fiver with chambered walnut body wings, ebony board and the new Aguilar Super Double pickups and a fretless five string that combines my favorite things about the fretless basses I’ve loved from Fbass, Pedulla & Roscoe. Chambered maple body wings, maple neck & fingerboard, polyester fingerboard finish and Bart quad coils and NTMB.
Here’s my custom body shape:
The top for the fretted
The maple burl top for the fretless
Which will get a brownburst finish
And be a coated, maple fingerboard fretless.
Chris is about to start the neck glue ups so I’m guessing I have 3-4 months before they are done. Cue Tom Petty ("The waiting is the hardest part . . .")
