Custom single cut 5 str for Chris Clemente

slight change of plans. customer sent an email asking how's the pickup widing going ...said, fine, here's a clip, he asks why we didn't use my pickups on his bass, I said you wanted nordstrands, he said 'well, now I want your pickups!'. So I'm gonna wind an MM style with smaller magnets (1/4") and a J style on a P2 (smaller) style cover both with exposed poles. This bass will now have wooden matching pickup covers.

pickup winding tutorial, anyone?

I'm waiting for the longer magnets since my current stock is not long enough for exposed poles. They should be here within a week or so. But I want to post the photos all at once. Maybe a small video or two.

But I'm sure you don't need any of the info I can provide anyway, so stop pretending! ;)

yeap, exposed poles, J style on a P2 sized cover and MM style humbucker with 1/4" magnets. Yes, the covers will be topped by redwood, but I'm using maple for the backer since it's a bit more stable than swamp ash.

YES! The jig does look great!

Since I am very new to this... I will ask the question that I hope some others are wondering (I have fictitiously put myself with a group to buffer my ignorance).

"Could you explain how and why you use this jig?" It seems that you use it just to line up the neck to the body? then take the neck off to route the pocket? (Sorry for trying to answer my own question. Just trying to redeem some lost ignorance.)

Thanks for any insight into this... I would love to see a thread with everyones jigs and their usage!

Thanks, it's based on David Myka's jig.

This bass is getting priority time right now as I want to meet a promised deadline and with me having to build the pickups and covers it's gonna be tight.

You are absolutely right! This jig is just to line up the neck to the body, remove the neck and then use the position of the two adjustable ramps as template guides to route the pocket. Keyword being 'adjustable', which brings me to why bother when you can just use a template. Well, since I'm building customs for many different customers and string configurations a single jig will allow me room to route most neck pockets that would require me to make several different templates for the purpose. And even then, it would mean that each neck would have to be PERFECT so that the pocket can be tight and seamless. With this jig I have much more slack on the accuracy of the neck. Set up is a snap! just mark the center line at the bottom of the neck, line that up with the centerline of the body (usually the glue line from top wood) and line up the (already centered to the ramps) center finding rule at the bottom of the body with the centerline and you're ready to go! Setup takes about 5 mins.

Thanks Rodent for that wiring jig idea. I used your concept to help wire this. In the past I used to put all the controls in the cavity and solder in place ...whew, this is so much easier!
