Wait, I thought one of the selling points of THE NEW WORLD is that the mix is dialed in and saved, and then you just recall it the next session...?You know what really sucks, when we waste like the first 45 min-1 hour of practice trying to get everyone's IEM mixes dialed in. It's so strange how it sounds fine one practice then you come in for the next one and he's gotta dial everyone it again. It can get mighty frustrating. There has been a couple times where I was just like, guys come on, screw the IE’s! Let’s just crank and jam. But they can’t even all do that. One of the guitarist doesn’t bring an amp (he just uses the Line 6 Helix floor which is pretty cool) and the keys doesn’t have a rig either. So even if I wanted it to be that way, it can’t be.
But like I said, it’s cool in some ways. Lame in others. Def makes it a lot easier recording stuff that’s for sure. But God do I miss the days of plugging my ears and smelling my tube amp get all hot n bothered.

@gregmon79, I would def miss the amps!
I started out in reverse. Obsessed with going direct.
My friend was like “you should try mic’ing”
“No way! It’s too difficult/too many variables”(at home, even...I thought)
But when we used to jam, he would get the best sounds out of my setup with a totally non-magical sm57.
So I bought an SM57. My first mic.
Listened to my recorded tone vs all the DI stuff I made and was proud of.
Then I bought my 2nd mic, an Audix i5. Blended them.
Now I got the bug, and in a conversation with my old guitar teacher who now plays for A Flock of Seagulls, we started just talking about mics, Heil PR40, Sennheiser MD421, ElectroVoice RE20....I decided I want to get a Beterdynamic MT88 eventually and blend that with my sm57.
It kinda reminds me of our overdrive fetish. But I love mic’ing now.
I’m not sure what my point was?
Carry on!XD
Oh there’s a point there. I see it. I swear….haha
I can see how that would be a huge rabbit hole. I know I was there with DI boxes last year but I always ended up finding a pedal I wanted more when money became available. I’ve always been like that. It’s funny, I’m sure there are plenty of reasons to use mid to high level mic’s when recording and or in a studio, but short of that, I don’t see any reason to not use an SM57. It’s an industry standard for a reason. It just works. I’m really GAS’n for one of those Palmer DI boxes that you can plug in between your amp and cab. Hopefully I can get one soon. I’m also fighting bass GAS atm too. I’m determined to get either another ATK or one of those newer Squier Contemporary Jazz basses with tax returns. I will get one or the other.

Okay who snagged the black enclosured / oxblood knobbed MBD-1 that just sold in the classifieds?
They want me to invest in some decent IE’s. Well, they suggested it.
I don’t know how you do the IE thing @gregmon79. I could see how it would work for some bands. I personally gotta get some good volume to get the dirt dialed in right. Our practice volume is loud enough for most gigs.
It’s not really band practice. It’s motha effin tone worship!

A bassist buddy of mine said the bandleader at his church switched everyone to IEMs. He told the BL that he hated not feeling his bass, so the BL set him up with one of those Buttkicker devices. I believe he said he got one that attaches to his stool rather than the floor. He said it's not the same as an amp, but it feels pretty cool and he's no longer miserable.
I've never used IEMs, but if I ever have to I will look into one for sure!
