Defending Davie504 (OMG)b

I find his videos irritating and grating. Some of it is him but most of it is the style of the videos themselves. I'm at least a generation too far along to enjoy that kind of ADD editing.

Good player, but it's kind of like a stuntman as compared to a boxer, a little?

I don't know anything about slapping, but from what I've seen there isn't much of anything that is beyond him technically. In one of his videos, he links to Justin Bieber talking about him. Bieber has seen his videos. So Davie says, "hey, your music may not be my thing, but if you want EPIC bass on your next recording, give me a call".

I doubt that call is coming, but I also don't doubt that he could lay down a very good slap bass track if called upon.

So I know Davie gets a bad rap because of the memes and stuff but I’ve also seen people get mad about his style.

I see a lot of ‘Davie would never be able to play in a band’ or ‘Davie is a one trick pony’ kinda thing and I may be kinda biased because he just released one of my favourite bass solos ever ().

I think Davie shouldn’t get such a bad rap because to make the solos enjoyable and new he has to slap, tap and play multiple other styles. I think he would be able to play in a band very well. Just because he plays like that doesn’t mean he can only play funk. Remember, he’s been playing for 10 years so he probably hasn’t only looked into funk.

In fact, if Davie gets criticised like this then what about Marcus Miller? Flea? And dare I say Victor Wooten. Heck, Jaco wasn’t your typical player. But in my book all these players are brilliant.

So what are your opinions on this? I’d love to hear what you have to say about this or just Davie in general.

Davie is nothing special as a bassist, but he's a good entertainer. And if that lets him make a living playing music, then good on him.

I don’t watch videos of any musicians much, and until after the upcoming US elections YouTube is pretty much off limits for me.

I’ve only briefly watched one of D-504’s vids, and didn’t see anything to make me want to dig deeper, but good on him for finding a way to get paid, and handsomely at that.

I dunno, I need some proof that it’s not just living room expertise. Dude has chops, but that’s not a difficult or rare thing to accomplish.

Marcus Miller defined an entire era of slap playing. Jack broke down and reimagined what it meant to play bass- and it ONLY worked with him as the defining star of the show, or at least a heavy feature. Victor Wooten is probably the single most technical bass player up until like 2005, and his supportive ensemble playing, in my opinion is criminally underrated, or at least not discussed enough at all. Flea kind of defines the sound of RHCP, but the reason it works, while lil Flea clones always sound crappy and cheesy by comparison, is that Flea has an uncanny ability to know what notes not to play, and he knows how / when to hold it down and be simple. Look at flea’s playing on the first Mars Volta Album- it really proves that he has incredible depth and restraint.

I like Davie more than Charles Berthoud, as I find the latter irritatingly unlistenable, but Davie really just strikes me more as a content creator than a working musician. He had made a musical niche for himself, and that’s fine and fun, but he’s a musical entertainer, and I’d need to see some sort of evidence that he could actually hang and write listenable parts that complete a song.

As an important side note and PSA- JUST BECAUSE SOMEONE IS SLAPPING DOESNT MEAN ITS FUNK. FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, WOULD EVERYONE STOP OVERUSING THE TERM FUNK/FUNKY, PLAYING STRAIGHT 16th NOTES FOR 8 BARS IS NOT FUNK JUST BECAUSE ITS SLAPPED AND POPPED. ITS LIKE TALKING TO SOMEONE’S SISTER-IN-LAW WHO JUST FOUND OUT YOU PLAY BASS

You should call him and demand it :D 3 guesses whether the dude cares. He's not trying to be anything but fun and entertaining to a segment of the Youtube populace. Nobody's claiming he's the second coming of bass, especially him. You guys are projecting all this stuff onto him.

I don’t think I’m projecting anything; I don’t much care what he can or can’t do. His content isn’t for me, chops aren’t a very difficult thing to work up, and I put a ton more value in musicians who make music, not content. He’s not someone I think of much at all, but I DO get pretty annoyed at people tagging me or sharing his content with me, so given the opportunity, I will gladly spread my immature disdain for my absolute least favorite form of musical creation.

Is 10 years a long time?

He gets a bad rap because people get tired of seeing him everytime they get on YouTube. I like him. I think he sounds good, and he's funny. But, I dont think I've ever really heard him play funk. He's always playing indie dance music. But, whatever. Davie's cool in my book.
