Not sure what you are talking about. From the very beginning, fretless bass was heavily used in death metal.
Besides, op is talking about Metallica, a complete different kind of tone and music.
I mean that death metal bass parts are much more easily played with fretted, no need for fretless.
There is no need for a bass guitar in Death metal, with this reasoning, the parts are much more easily played with a keyboard.

Anyone who is worried about this sort of thing isn't a player. Fingerboard wear on a Fretless with Roundwounds is treated around here like you're playing Russian roulette with the life of your instrument. My cheap Yamaha BB300 which was converted into a Fretless 27 years ago, has never had flats, and the current set of strings has been on since 2004 when it was last setup, little or no wear on the board. I recently cleaned the board and it was dirtier than it was worn.

I don't think tape wounds are the best string for metal.

They have a great growl that you would enjoy on that fretless!
My Warmoth neck was worn even deeper than that when I bought it. Was basically unplayable. Since having it leveled and epoxied i've put hundreds of hours play on it and while there is some evidence of scratching there is basically no wear. It'll probably last longer than I do now.
If it ever becomes a problem, a CA or epoxy coating will prolong the fingerboard life. I had an ebony fretless Warmoth neck coated by Pedulla 25 years ago, some kind of bulletproof polyester, it still looks virtually pristine, rounds all along. CA is nasty to work with, but much easier to apply than epoxy. In the meantime, flog the daylights out of it.

...lots of good advice here... a bass IS a tool... when it's shot, you fix it or get a new one... don't let a bass dictate how you play...
