You may wonder why if I have one of the most iconic Dingwall basses in the world, I'm now seen playing a production-Dingwall regularly...
...pssst...it's because they're WICKED good.
My Dingwall NG-3 has now played 33 shows this year from NC up to VT, and I've got not a single complaint. I'm actually pondering doing some work on the Rastaburst to get it set up more like the NG.

Yeah man, I was gonna say “I know why”. The NGs, in the past, have been pigeonholed for djent and metal but the more and more they get out there, peeps are realizing just how good they are for any music. That strong, muscular midrange is a force to be reckoned with. Nothing else really sounds like them.

It totally sounds like a Dingwall. If you push the low-mids up a bit, I can understand people connecting it to that music because it reads as having a little bit of roughness to the tone. We multitrack nearly all our live shows for review (and possible later release) and I thought maybe I was imagining it, but I've come to hear that little bit of grittiness in it. Usually I've left the low mid flat or rolled back a bit (along with the high mid) and then it is straight up smooth not unlike the other basses.
Oh, don’t get me wrong, there’s no mistaking it’s a DW but it has.....that.....something that separates it.
I think by adding that 3rd pick really opened it up even more so for other genres
I would say the main reasons you are liking it more that the rasta - Tone Capsule pre, and a middle pickkup. That means stronger mids. I have an ABII 6 string that is great, but same thing, no middle pickup and not Tone Capsule. That's why I have an NG3 6 string on order.
Quick question guys - anyone know what the pickup selection options will be on the forthcoming NG3 6 strings? I'm hoping the same as my Z3, i.e., bridge solo, bridge-middle, bridge-neck, neck solo. Not sure if this is what it is on the NG3 5 strings either.

I've been running it Bridge/Middle Series, while the Rastaburst I run neck/bridge and either parallel or series. The difference being that it stays more focused in series with both pickups back a bit. The tone Capsule is an interesting creature, I don't know that I'd natively pick those points, but I've sort of adjusted to where they are. The mids are generally stronger on the NG3, not hugely but definitely a bit more definition.
The action on the NG is decently lower. In the 4 Dingwalls in my possession:
NG3 = Lowest
Combustion = a lil' bit higher than the NG, but in that ballpark...pretty damn close.
Rastaburst (Zebra-Voodoo 1) = thinner neck but action is higher than either combustion
Voodoo Prima = Thickest neck by far, highest action. Good practice bass for this reason.
That's a resounding recommendation from a player like yourself.
You didn't fall in love with the Combustion v4 you played either, did you? (in comparison to the NG)
NG3's have the same switching style as the D-bird, which is not what you've just specified unfortunately. Same on 5 and 6 string variants.

I agree with you guys. The NG3 has matured into an extremely versatile and great playing bass. I do think the Canadian built basses have a certain finesse and are amazing to play, but for an everyday gigging bass the NG3 is a hard to beat workhorse. And I think we have dispelled the notion that it is ONLY a Metal genre bass. Country, Jazz, Reggae, anything else is all within it's sphere. And yes, I also agree that the 3rd pickup added a mid finesse - to me it sounds "bigger" "fuller".

Not according to this. Now, they might have it wrong too but apparently the NG3 does not have the same pickup switching as the D-bird.
The D-bird switching is as follows if I remember correctly:
1. Bridge Solo
2. Bridge/Middle (Parallel)
3. Middle Solo
4. Bridge/middle (Parallel) in series with neck

Are you sure about that? The dbirds switch was a feature of the dark glass ng3 and not the regular ones from what I saw. Having it different to abzs would be great
