Yeah, no offense to anyone on this bass (and the owner is a friend), but I don't dig the uber-figured wood with pickguard look. I don't really love flame/quilt with a guard.
This was just the same one NaH posted above, it's most recent Reverb listing says it is a Sklar model but NaH says the pickups are wrong for a Sklar. The listing I posted tells the story of it being signed by Sheldon while he was at the store so I trust that they listed it accurately with information from the man himself
Yeah, the timeline on this says not a Sklar. It's definitely an early Z2. While Lee may have been part of the decision to have the pickup placement the official Sklar model dates to what, 2005 or later in my recollection.
I'm not a fan of pick guards in general. I do agree I'd prefer no guard at all, but that isn't an option on the P.

Id go with a clear pickguard myself if possible!
I think P’s are perfect for solid colors and metallic flake finishes.
The pickguard covers so much surface, I’d spend the extra dough on a custom paint rather than a highly figured and stained top.
I’ve never been a fan of the traditional three tone bust over plain wood.
That matte gold flake D bird was stunning. Ghost flames, racing stripes, that sort of thing. Metallic red, purple, gold, even a aircraft polished aluminum look with classy Vargas pinup girl...
I’ve thought about ordering some gold metallic pickguard material and making another pickguard for my black P. The pickguard is all scratched up from my pinky nail. For now, the Darkglass sticker covers most of the damage.

Pretty sure the P's are top routed so that wouldn't be an option, also I can't stand the clear guards (sorry to those who have or like them, they're not for me) so a definite non-starter.
I'll probably go with a transparent burst over ash. I'd prefer the alder body and an ash top but I don't think that is an option, at least not a sensibly priced option for ash.
The only tops I like are the burls and spalted maple. The quilts and flames do nothing for me, neither do natural finishes. Yes I have a natural super J and I wish it was any other colour, but I love it anyway.
I am the opposite; I am not a fan of most burls and spalted tops. Natural is simple and classic and I don't mind those (my SP5 is natural alder). Flamed and quilted tops are hit and miss. It really depends on the instrument and I think I prefer flamed of the two.
If I were picking a colour or finish on a Dingwall now, I'd be strongly considering a transparent sonic blue burst.
Nate already beat me to it, but the second thing I thought when I saw this pic was 'clear pickguard'.

+1. Not a fan of pick guards at all. I see the functionality, but I hate the aesthetic.
Having said that...
...I've seen some pretty sweet clear and matching wood pick guards. I had a clear one on an old StingRay and, of course, my current 'Rays, but I prefer to NOT have them. If I were to order a Super J, it would be a rear-route, no pick guard setup.
Didn’t wanna say anything, and no offense, but why cover half a Clara walnut top with plastic. Just my opinion.
If I could find one of these locally, I'd be all over it. Such a great looking guitar.

That charcoal to pink reverse burst is like a (massively) upgraded version of a DR Heartfield bass I used to have

I ordered an AB2 on December ( coming on December 2019..sigh).
When I asked for reverse burst like blue purple ()
told me that it's more than 2500 $ extra for that color
I was reluctant to share this info publicly, but what the heck. I talked to the guy who applied this finish to this bass and asked him how long it took him. I assumed it his answer would be some number of hours or dozens of hours. He explained to me in detail exactly how he did it, and said it took a total of 20 minutes.That's not the least bit insane...
