So yeah. Things happened. After trying all the DG stuff for recording, I've come to the conclusion that I will never be able to replace an amp, cab and microphone for recording. However much I tried, I couldn't get the pedals to sound better recording than when driving an amp and cab.

The Aguilar DB 751, while being an absolutely amazing amp in every regard, in the end was too clean sounding for me. So I have put it up for sale locally in Sweden.

So now you are thinking "what are you replacing the Aggie with?"

Well, after doing a ton of soul searching, listening to music I love and bass tones I can't get enough of, I pulled the trigger on a Sunn 300T. Got it for an extremely good price. Dan Briggs of BTBAM has always had amazing bass tone, especially on Automata I/II, Coma Ecliptic and Parallax II. Growly, fat, gritty and musical low end. What's even more amazing is the fact that he achieves this using the clean channel.

Anyway. I'm very stoked for this. After having been a "bass and amp" kind of person for most of my years playing bass, I have sold/am selling my drive pedals to come full circle. You just can't beat a good tube amp IMO. It's only taken me 22 years to realise that, haha.

I have two of those (the Fender 300 PRO, which is the same thing).

Why 2? I had so much trouble finding the first one, I bought the 2nd one as soon as I found it for backup.

They are heavy though!

You really, really owe it to yourself to try a modeler setup (Helix or Fractal Audio).

There are 1/4"+USB combo jacks for recharging the LiIon packs. Seems like that would be an easy mod to enable charging rechargeable 9vs in situ.

Then you also have the option of replacing the battery if anything in the system goes awry, and all the quicker with a Dingwall magnetic cover. The best of both worlds?

I may actually end up getting a Line 6 HX Effects to cover my effects needs. As far as amp simulation and the like? It just doesn't work for me. There are tons of great options available, I just can't seem to get the sound I want from them. I would like to expand my bass vocabulary with effects, however. Chorus, flanger, those kind of things.

The jack switches on the battery. So the battery is always draining as long as the bass is plugged in.

The main changes to the Super Series in the last while is that the bodies are thinner. The originals had full sized bodies (back to front) and were chambered to help reduce weight. By going to a thinner body, they do not need to chamber anymore, although I don't know if the 4-strings were chambered.

My SP5 does not have neck dive when standing and strapped on. Not enough to be noticeable and it's not much over 8 lbs. It does dive a little when sitting without a strap, but that's normal.

Neck dive will always be an issue when you start getting really light, especially if the bass is not headless and the more tuners you have.

I'd also be on the lookout for the Atomic Amps Bass Box. Their Ampli-Firebox is HIGHLY regarded in the guitar world for sounding fantastic! No reason to believe their bass modeler won't be just as good, and "cheap"(I don't consider $300 cheap, but it is compared to an Axe FX, Kemper, or even a Helix.).

I had a Helix, it sounded amazing.

I just ordered an Ampero...will try it as a hardware into DAW and for guitar...will see if it has anything useful for bass.

My gut instinct on this is if it's a Super, go with blocks, if an AB or Z then Speedo bars. But then, I have a Z with blocks and a Super with dots so what so I know. :smug:

And yeah, sometimes nothing looks good too. Like if the fingerboard has some beautiful grain to it.

Yeah, i think there is something to the look of blocks on the Super. I'm debating on going with dots + D inlays @ 12th fret. That'd look nice, too
