I tend to play both pickups in parallel, or solo neck with treble and mids rolled off. But you already know that!

So the D-bird Standard necks are more thick like NGs? Unfortunately, I have not played an afterburner yet but I think that is where I need to be. I'm pretty new to Dingwalls, so the Super J and NGs/Combustions are all that I have played so far. I get around OK on the NG, but it is a little too chunky for me.

A pristine AB-1 arrived safely today! So stoked! 7lb-7oz. Passive with FD3's, and a standard tone pot.
And it looks like my favorite strings, DR Pure Blues VW 95-40 are going to fit. The E string just makes the nut.
Going for a hike to give things time to acclimate, then I'll get it set up. Pearl dots, and I'm already thinking Luminlay blue....
I'm going to give the FD3's a good long tryout before I do anything there, if I do anything at all. Series, P tone? We'll see...So far they sound great. And I've got the Super P for P stuff.

The neck thickness isn't hugely different (maybe a mm or two) between AB & NG...I discussed this with Sheldon when I was moving from my Z to an NG. He basically said that if I got along with the AB I'd like the NG. The bigger difference probably lies in the fact that the Canadian necks are compound radius while the import necks are standard radius.
For those of you bold enough to play a fretless Dingwall, hows the experience, specifically on those small lines they do on the long side of the neck?
I agree, I think the radius is what is felt vs thickness and what give the NG a bit chunkier if a feel.
But there exceptions to that as well. Of the 20? I’ve played I’d say 75% felt very close to an AB. The rest felt chunkier.
Between 3-12 feels just like home. Perfect. Below 3 requires a little bit of effort to be were your supposed to but not a lot. Above 12 I wish I had markings between the G and C like an F bass. That said I’m not long into it soo given another couple days f months this may get revised. 3-12 though, fingers just seem to go exactly where the are supposed to. Standard chordal fingering is quite easy to maintain intonation so far on basic chords.
Well that sounds promising! Keep us updated...I do play quite a bit up in that region, so that would definitely factor into my decision.

I regret to inform all other Dingwall people...I've broken Mo. He says that he isn't likely to take on a project like this in the future. It was a lot of work to remove the inlays cleanly and get to here.
...and I'm endlessly grateful.

Yep. still in the works. It's been a 5hitastic couple weeks at my day job (luckily we've had a few weeks off from our gig schedule too, which has helped)...but it's been so nice to have updates coming in from Mo throughout the time. I know it's been more trying than he expected to get the inlays out and back in...but here's some in-action shots... It will be 'finished out' properly and the fingerboard recoated well.

Looks great, Bill - and Mo, of course. It's a lot of work to do this (I know, I've done it myself - non-multi but the effort is the same, project in progress). Looking forward to get some reports on how the Luminlay wears compared to the timber - you don't want to get little ridges.

I just looked at Luminlay and two rods of 3mm blue and the fun little keychain LED light, shipped is under $50. I"ll need two rods to do both side and fretboard dots. About 4800 yen.
