There is a nice natural finish ABZ on reverb right now in Chicago for a great price. Not sure what preamp is in it but I’d guess it’s a glockenklang
I don’t think they are under appreciated. I just think most Dingwall players play 5 strings more commonly.
Off and on I’ve wanted a 4 but the reality is I will miss the other strings.
The only “player” 4 string I own is my acoustic and that’s cause playing acoustically the low B on any acoustic I found was pointless

I started on a Dingwall Super J 4 string. Fun bass to play. Sold my last 4 string last year. I almost feel guilty not owning/playing a 4 string anymore. That's what I learned on and played for 20+ years. Maybe I need a recovery program.
I’m all four stringers all the time. I am super stoked on the AB-1 four string.
My main issue going between my AB and Super series basses was the difference in string spacing at the bridge. 18mm vs 19mm. The four string AB-1 has the same 19mm string spacing as my Super P. (Same spacing as the Cirrus, as well)
And the four stringers seem to be among the lightest Dingwalls out there.
I never really got into the B string, except on my six string, but I loved the 37” E when I went E-C.
I started the Dingwall journey with a sweet Super PJ 4. The only reason I explored the fives and six was because they were Dingwall basses. It’s not hard to go out on a limb if you are totally confident it’ll be a great bass.

String spacing is more of a 'discomfort issue' than scale lengths, it seems. The 19mm spacing on my four-string NG-2 is part of why I went with another long-scale. Light? My ash/maple (4-string) SP weighs seven lbs, 4 oz. It sounds a whole lot bigger!

$2300 for a used ABZ from 2008-2012? That is not even close to a good deal. They sell in the $1600~ range.
I’m guessing it’s newer then that and it also has a 3 band Glock or DG
I’d speculate 2015-16 by the serial number.
Edit: just checked my SJ serial number and I’d put this as released into the wild around spring - summer 2016.
Your right. It is priced as it was new then I’d guess but of course to build it new NOW would probably be $3600 maybe more. Either way, your right. Not the most amazing DEAL. Solid value buy though still. IMO.
Pop in a 3rd pup and it’s a killer bass for around the same price as a new NG but Canadian built.

All the talk of 4 vs 5 etc. I have a four, but I've been gravitating towards the 5s more. I find there are still songs that ask for a 4, but I just put my thumb on the B and we're golden. I agree they are very light. I keep the four for when I have songs that need some speed or lots of chord changes. And because this one has mandolin frets. I never consciously noticed the string spacing differences when switching between them.
