I'm not surprised at your findings, when I had a D-Bird Standard, it was consistently as versatile as any other bass I had, including other Dingwall's. You can get, darn near, any sound out of that bass that you want, AND, my passive D-Bird Standard was also, LOUDER than any bass I had at the time, including other Dingwall's. If I had better been able to deal with the ergo's of the D-basses, I'd still have one...:thumbsup:

Nope. The 6er is Matte Black with Red grain enhancement. :thumbsup:

Ok so anyway end of this story here :

It sounds like the SS strings that are buzzing are just small enough to rattle in the nut slots. I can't say for sure but it could be that winding the string down further on the tuner posts is causing the string to rest on the back of the slot. The chances of this are slim but worth testing by raising the string on the post. 7 degrees of downward angle is all you need.

If this doesn't help then the slots are slightly too large for the SS strings. The easiest fix would be to install Nickels. To make the SS strings work in the slots, a smaller slot can be cut at the bottom of each of the problem slots. These smaller slots are extremely shallow. Maybe .002" deep using a file that is 50% - 75% the diameter of the string.

The payson SSs had fixed the problem but I didn't bond with them - they're good strings but not my thing.
So I ended up taking it to a local luthier, and the slots were indeed just a bit too wide for the DW SS.
I asked for a new nut, he said that generally he tries to go for the minimally invasive procedure first, so we agreed on him filling the 2 slots (E and A) then recutting that, and if it didn't solve the issue then a new nut.
The issue was solved though, so I'm very happy now.

He also touched the setup a bit, what I had done myself at home was not too far away from the optimal, he made the neck just a tad flatter and had the bridge settings follow the neck curvature a bit more and that was it.
And I brought the pickups back to a more serious height - I'll just get better preamps :)

Pretty much any regular set of strings fit on the supers so pick whatever you like the most really. I had TI's on mine and would go with them again over anything else but I like the low tension feel.
