Dingwall Owners Club

I sometimes use a patch cable I made to connect a battery-powered tuner to my NG2, and the right angle plug I used seems to just barely work with the NG2. This is the plug: [This invalid link has been removed]

I've never used it for more than briefly checking my tuning, though, so take this recommendation with a grain of salt. If you want I can check it more closely when I'm home.
I have 4 cables with that Amphenol right angle at one end and straight at the other. With the NG, the RA works until you have the slightest bump, then loses contact.

I was playing my SJ the other day and used the RA, then switched basses and it worked but the signal was so low. I tried new batteries and same thing. If I moved the connector around I could make it to work, but it wouldn't stay. I flipped the cable around and BAM! Back in business.

Wow! Supper fast shipping from Payson Bass Strings.
Ordered on Wednesday and they came from Texas to my house in Oregon on Friday at noon, less than 48 hours. :wideyed:

Will get them on today or tomorrow and report back how they work live after this weekend.
Thanks @Blues Cat.

Oh, ya... Nickel rounds 5 string for Combustion regular 3 with DB switch.
I just got a set last week and I love them so far. There wasn't anything wrong with the tone of the Dingwall strings (I liked them also) but I like my action on the lower side and the lower tension on the Dingwalls didn't work the best for my set up. I love the feel and tone of the Paysons so far - just what I was looking for.

I've done a search and couldn't find an answer, so here goes...

I'm thinking about trying the Dingwall F# string set (for the five-string NG, if that matters). I'd rather not alter the stock nut on my NG, though, in case I ever want to switch back. I emailed Dingwall about whether they sell one but I'm not optimistic (I would imagine if they sold it they'd put it on their web site...but who knows maybe I'll get lucky). I'm sure some people have just thrown the F# string set on the normal nut and called it good, but has anyone gotten a separate nut for the F# set?

has anyone put it on the normal nut and it was ok? Since Dingwall says on the strings order page that a new nut is needed, I kind of assumed it wouldn’t work. I had them add an F# string to another parts order, so I have one (string - not nut), but am hesitant to do if a nut is needed. Not to mention I’m not sure if it will be useful in a praise and worship setting (but I ordered anyway cause I was curious).

Anyone have their Dingwall strung with the F# string set ? So what do you call this, Baritone Bass ? If your rig can reproduce the F# it must be a GOD note ! I would love to hear this set up if someone can post a recording here !!!!!!! and please excuse this old dog's ignorance on this subject !
Dingwall Afterburner ABXXX + Darkglass B7K test

Dingwall Afterburner ABXXX 6-string DI test (Low F#)

Those sound clips are likely what sold A LOT of people on a Dingwall tuned to F#.

Personally, I've tried it on a 5 string NG-2 and I never liked it. Even when you get a string gauge that provides proper tension and a properly filed out nut, the string is just too floppy and inarticulate for me. I tried all kinds of pedals, filters, and preamps - it wasn't for me.

If I were to play with a guitarist in F# I'd likely tune UP to F#, because I really don't like being tuned THAT low.

My guitarist has started writing songs on an 8 string in EAEADGBE. I'm playing AEAD, and I've found it works pretty well for the kind of music we're writing.

I guess it's all a matter of preference, and the kind of music you play, myself, I prefer a nice deep articulate tone, probably because i'm more from the older school of classic rock ! BEADG works just fine for my style ! I switched to 5 string about 15 yrs ago, and wish I had done it long before that, and when I finally got the Dingwall a few yrs ago, I was, and am now in bass heaven !!!

I’m with you.

BEADG works well with the PA systems in the venues where I play. 5 string basses since ‘84, and Dingwall since 2013.

I love that at age 65, my tone is the best I’ve ever had!

Hmm. To be honest, that doesn't make me want it. I wonder if it might be different if I heard it direct played over a 18" speaker or something.

I use my F# basses at church, the low string gets used quite a bit particularly in quiet parts of a song as an almost synth note as it sustains so well. I played along with our (asthmatic) pipe organ last Sunday and the Dingwall fattened up the rumbley low notes nicely.

I"veg ot a combustion 6 with low F#. My current cabs struggle.

I have triple driver, extended low range in ears, I wonder what it would sound like in those. I imagine a good FOH would handle it. I'm imagining that playing closer to the bridge would give you a tighter, more articulate sound ??!! Maybe, some time in the future, when I get another Dingwall, I'll give it a try ! I am thinking my Bergantino B amp thru my two 112 reference cabs would reproduce the F# reasonably well !

The F# fundamental frequency is 23.12 Hz.
The specs on most good IEMs probably will claim to go down to 20 Hz. For example, I know the 64Audio A3e's go down to 20 Hz. (But do your ears go down to 20 Hz? :) )
Your REF112 x 2 array probably doesn't go down to 23.12 Hz on paper, but I would still expect it to sound very good. It will have some attenuation down at F#, but there will still be some very audible content there. Of course, the note is not a pure sine wave, it's loaded with harmonics, and our brains do a great job of filling in the missing bits so we still know what note is being played.
The biggest concern with those low freqs is the gobs of power required to reproduce them. Even if the FOH is capable, the FOH guy is likely to roll it off a bit unless he has massive headroom available by being well below his power limits.

And yes, playing close to the bridge, and also turning down the bass tone control will really help to achieve note definition at these low freqs.
