Dingwall Owners Club

Very curious. There’s an older Afterburner in the classifieds. The seller posted a video of some different playing styles and pickup positions with a really good recording. If any of you have checked it out, my question is... do the newer pickups and wiring configurations still sound like that? I’m utterly drooling over the “2nd Position finger” tone. It just hits ALL the right spots for me. So far, I’ve yet to hear any recording of a Dingwall (non import version) that is even in the same league as this thing. The closest would be on Dingwall’s YouTube page with Claudio Rocha playing an NG2.

I don’t know those older pickups very well but I think they are dual coil and splittable. @burning skies or @singlemalt would probably know. I feel SM had this exact bass or damn close to it.

that said, I’d guess this is passive with a bluecube or something like that so with that a similarly spec’d passive AB1 could still sound much like this.

The fire happened on Oct. 18, 1996. I don't have a good handle on the S/N thing because records from before the fire were destroyed including all the SN info. I can say that they're not always 100% sequential before the fire. For example my early Voodoo Prima has a higher number than some after it. Sometimes it's easier to go by features and aesthetic cues.

I have a vague recollection of Sheldon saying that they played with zero frets but not much beyond that.

This bass dates to the mid-2000's...has the BluEQube (passive mid cut switch), the knobs may or may not be original to the instrument (that's around the time the shop started making their own, many of us with this era bass at the time ordered up new ones to replace the stock ones).

The pickups are FD3's but most likely what you're hearing is that the coils are in parallel rather than series. In the days before FD-3's had 4-leads and you could wire the coils in parallel or series...they came in parallel. That changed by 2007-08 or so when the shop started making the FD3-4L and people could opt for coil switches...and the BluEQube disappeared.

The neck is 5-piece, but is not poly-finished like the current AB's. It's an oil wax finish to the back of the neck, so it does have to be somewhat regularly re-waxed and does feel different from the current finishes. As is often the case, the headstock signature has been smudged, most likely by someone who's waxed the neck and touched the headstock with hands that still had wax on them...another fairly common thing.

My best guess is that bass would have retailed new for somewhere around 1800$ If I were serious about it, I'd really be trying to negotiate the price somewhat aggressively given some of the condition issues involved.
