Look what showed up! Sadly i forgot to get a speakeon cable and they are out of stock locally. Crossing my fingers the one i ordered arrives tomorrow.

Truth be told… I’m going for BEAD. Just waiting for a custom set of D’Addarios to arrive.
I didn’t fancy how gross the thick 0.160 felt and sounded, even tuned up to A.
april should see the arrival of my F# six string ab1. The grosser the better! If it seems like i always bring it up and am counting the days… it is because i am. >_<
Haha! I play primarily fingerstyle though so I don’t fancy the thicc strings. Plus I don’t even have an ounce of the metric tonnage of compression and gain that I hear in the music I enjoy listening to.

as i get used to my five i use the b more and more when i am playing up high. I cant imagine the f# being much different. Either way, i am excited to try it out. But it is a niche/“because i can” bass.
The best part of getting the nut cut F# by Dingwall or someone who knows not to change the depth and can pull it off, is that it can still be strung B-C (sixer) afterwards. It wasn’t for me but I’m glad I tried F#. I prefer down tuning 1.5 steps to G# if I want/need to go that low. Totally try it out but the thinner string sounds better to me.
My exact sentiments. Mine was cut for a 0.160 set and I’m having no problems in DGCF right now with 45-105T strings, then later in BEAD 60-130T.
I tried having a huge string for F# a while back, and I ended up preferring the "tune-up" approach. I desperately wanted F# (and/or E) to work, but I could not get the timbre to match my expectations. While it was relatively clear on the 37" scale, the string was massive and hard to work with. I know it has been done by some people, but it didn't bond with me like I wanted it to.
The compromise I came to with my guitarist at the time was my bass in AEAD, and his 8 string guitar in EAEADGBE. There was really fun interactions in our riffs, and we wrote some great tunes. Unfortunately those songs weren't recorded, but I had a ton of fun playing them in the drummers basement

I’m gonna give a Payson .145 a try next time I order for some drop A tuning
Yeah, pretty much sums it up too. I’m glad I tried my “dream” tuning though (drop G - as it seems to be my favorite on guitar, be it 6 or 7 strings). Now I’ve come to terms with the fact that anything below A0 is probably going to sound bad to my ears– through my gear and fingers.

as a total non expert… what i gather about a good f# or similar is that it is more about the harmonics of the fundamental, and not the fundamental itself (far too flubby). Thus overdrive, rolling back some lows, and compression. It is viable for specific music styles only imho.
I was tempted to go for Payson too, but for under $26 I was able to make a custom BEAD set for my NG-3 using D’Addario XL Nickels.
60, 80, 100, 130T (the 130T is super long scale). I bet you can make your own for drop A too.
I’m a HUGE fan of Spiritbox, and their bassist uses a 0.160 on his NG-3 (5) for F#. His tone is incredible, especially heard on the track “Sun Killer.”
im not a fan of D’Addario strings no matter how many times I try them. The best D’addario strings I have played are the actual dingwall strings (which are great) but every other set I’ve tried I’ve not liked. I get cost factors though. Fir sure….
Spiritbox is cool. I dont want to sound anti lady singers… but she is the only female metal singer that i can handle. She is really good!
here is a f# sounding pretty clean. .170. So low that even my iphone speakers can reproduce it! Lol. (Harmonics!)
