...there's just something visual about it that keeps me from loving it fully.

This is how I feel about most Kiesel and Carvin instruments TBH. I own a couple and they are great in many ways, but something about the body shapes just doesn't seem fully dialed in visually. Hard to put my finger on exactly what it is, but looking at my CT6 next to a PRS, for example, it's pretty apparent.

It's the headstock on my jazz. I hid it a little by swapping on clover tuners but because I know it's there I can't unsee it lol

I'm a french guy who looking for a Dingwall. I tried a NG3 a year ago. She was great !!! But I tried yesterday an AB1. So lovely !
But the price is lovely also
Where are the differences between AB1 and Combustion ? I know for the pickups and hardware. But in term of playability, especially the neck, is it a game changing ? Because the price of the AB1 is 2k€ more.
If you have experienced the Combustion and AB1, your advice would be good.
And sorry in advance for my english !!

I’ve been fortunate to own many wonderful, unique Dingwall basses. Lately I’ve been thinking about finding the next good home for the Prima Artist. It’s the best playing and sounding bass by far, but not a daily player for me. Been great to have had the opportunity to own and play it. I’m not going to slap a for sale sign on it. But would be open to discuss serious offers. I think it’s in the top 3 basses that Sheldon has created. Hoping it finds someone who truly values it. Send me a PM. Perfectly happy to keep it as well. We’ll see. (Hopefully not breaking TB rules.)

I agree. It's one of my favourites!

I'd love to ask, but I know it would be way more than I'd be willing to pay for a bass and I am currently shedding some basses. Good luck!

I’ll try to offer you a brief summary here.

The obvious differences are in the specs for sure.

NG
Alder body, maple neck and fretboard
FD3n production pickups
Dark glass tone capsule
Stroll retainer on head stock

AB body wood options, neck options, Canadian handmade pick up options, preamp options, pick up series/parallel switch’s(option), custom finish and X top options. Dingwall one piece bridge, hip shot tuners
Countersunk tuners so no string retainer required.

when you get into the design and lines of the basses. The AB does have more refinement. More hands on pride goes into the neck contour and for playability and feel. The fretboard is a compound radius…DISCLAIMER: the website states that the NG is also. I did not believe this to be the case. I’m actually confused a bit on this right now. I thought it was 9.45” radius. Did it change? Mine is definitely not compound. Anyways,

AB compound. NG single radius(correct me if I am wrong someone)

The necks on the combustion line(NG) can vary in feel. Some feel thin and amazingly fast others have felt more thick and rounded aLa P bass. I recommend playing more then one to get a fair assessment.

The AB or especially the Z definitely feel like you’re playing an extension of your body vs the NG feels more like a bionic arm!(still rad!) Haha

all this said, An NG is an awesome instrument that can give you a lifetime of enjoyment. If you like the finer things in life… the Canadian models…

I don’t think it’s fair to say one will sound better than the other as specs vary, mods happen, set up and strings impact this, and of course… playing style, so I leave that factor out of any bass to bass comparison.

I started with an NG3. Since then I've had an ABI, an older ABZ, another NG3, and a newer ABZ.

I currently have a Z3 in production.

They've all been fantastic. I'm not huge on the FD3 pickups or the DG tone capsule. I could still get a sound I loved from the NGs, but that combo isn't my favorite.

It's really up to you if you want to drop the extra coin.

I've never played a Z, but I have faith I'll love mine. If I don't, the resale market for Dingwall is pretty strong. Especially on the Canadian models.

Maintenance is super key. I’m at a same point. Rehearsal next week, recording in the near future… strings are expensive. Picking and choosing. Either way it’s time for a breath of freshness brought into the mix.
I’m glad you realized this vs a foolish sale prior to maintenance.

For series, I know the standard recommendation is red (+), white (-), and green+black together.

I'm curious which coil (treble or bass) is feeding which coil (treble or bass) for series.

Which coil is red/black and which is green/white?

@AB Nate Thanks! Great thread! I'll dig in to that one.

My neck pups are wired parallel from the factory. The new middle pup I got I think was wired series, but I'd have to look at it again. Either way, ....

Yeah, I'm building a frankenstein, but it will look completely stock....

That is... if I can shove everything in under the cover.

All pickups go to dpdt push-pull under the t/m/b controls so I can do parallel/series for each pup. Then they travel over to the Fretnation 6-way switch which I'm going to leave wired exactly as they suggest. The active/passive toggle switch is being re-configured for the switchable mid-range tone on the Nordstrand 3B. The volume is another dpdt switch for the active/passive switching.

Also, how many people would choose an octave divider, then bury it deep enough in the tone that it's barely noticeable?
