Dingwall Owners Club

Cycling through different strings on my newly acquired DBird to see how it reacts to different types and brands. I’ve tried Flats, Stainless, Nickels and Daggers so far. Each has their strengths and all sounded good. I’ve used tapes with good success on my non fanned fret basses, so I’d be interested to see how those sound as well.

Does anyone make a four or five string fanned fret tapewound string set?

I'll share here as it's kinda dingwall related, definitely inspired and I'm using a dingwall 6way switch.
Nordstrand was my first choice for a triple set but as mentioned they can't modify the nordwall dingstrand. I came across a builder Bud LeCompte and we discussed what my goals were and he came up with a sick set. The neck P is one he makes and the middle bridge is based off of a single shell pickup he recently developed but he tweaked it to accomplish something unique and to have them both interact with each other as if in a single shell using the switch from Mo. I'm going to attempt to route it myself and refinish the body.
Edit: I have a 4band Audere Pro Z pre amp as well that was factored into the design

Jason at FretNation does a lot with custom and oddball string sets.

He set me up with a set of La Bella black nylon tapes for my ABZ-5, and they were a perfect fit.

Lots of character, with complex, woody mids. I really enjoyed them.

Dude, me too, lolol.. I was gonna ask if anyone recognized anything from the new pic drop.. the one that may be close to my specs is the one at the far end of that batch (not seen in that pic). I cant tell for sure though. They sure are good at keeping us in suspense :roflmao:..

Curious, is yours Northern Ash/Swamp ash? I chose Northern Ash/Alder for mine. The one with the arrow pointed at it has me wondering... I'm getting a 6 as well - you can't see the pup routes on that one at all so no indication there. The grain pattern looks more like ash to me as well, but I'm not 100% sure.

Mine is ash. It will have a wenge neck.

They said they’d make FDV in square covers?? I inquired and was pointed to Nordstrand to replace my square FD3. I do like Nordstrand pickups, though.

I am doing a 5 string fretless build with an Audere Pro Z pre with 4 band EQ. The Audere takes two pickup inputs. Mine has three knobs with concentrics. Master Volume/Balance, High Mid/Low Mid, and Bass/Treble. With your pickup configuration, are you leaving the second pickup input empty and forgoing the balance? With all the pickup selection before the Audere?

I assume you are using the Audere 3-way switch for even more tone options?

I don’t yet have pickups for my build, but have the bass, electronics, Warmoth custom neck, hardware, and most of the wood for the body.

Here is my tentative plan for electronics. This is neither a schematic nor a wiring diagram, more like a flow chart.

I was planning on Nordstrand pickups, but those LeCompte ones look very interesting.

Might as well post a graphic of my photoshop rendering even though this is getting pretty far from Dingwall related. (Sorry)

@kirkdickinson the single Vol 4 band 4 hole. The other hole in the EHB will be the Dingwall selector switch for the pickups.
I put a two knob three band classic into my DROC a while back and love it. I'm even tempted to have one made that's a two know HM/LM and T/B eliminating the volume but getting a 4 band and the selecter knob

Do you like the 3-way selector switch? Do you use it a lot, or leave it on one setting most of the time? Did you ever reprogram it to any of the other settings that are available or leave the 3 factory presets? You have a bewildering array of switchable options 6x3=18 before you even sculpt your tone with the eq knobs.

What pre comes in the DROC, or is that passive from the factory?

Good eye to spot those configuration details. I guess I had an advantage in playing “spot my bass” when it was in that condition, due to the x-top.

Lol guys you are hilarious :) I can relate so much. We have a word for this called Vorfreude, basically 'anticipation joy'
