I've been trying to find good, cheap and easily available strings for my D-Roc 5 for ages now but a few weeks back I bought a few extra Dingwall B-strings from a local who had accidentally bought 5-string sets for their 4-strings. I had gotten a few extra 4-string sets when I bought my D-Roc 4 from the shop for a few mishaps with the bass that were lying around unused and now I'm in love. Already ordered bunch of extra sets from Thomann, that's the way it's going to be for me for now. For the four-string I'm still trying out different sets since Dingwall doesn't make them thick enough. If someone knows a shop inside EU (aka not UK) that stocks Paysons, let me know.

For now though, here's me trying to push the limits of the standard 45-130 set in Drop-F#. I've also finally figured out the angles that make the Aquamarine really *pop*, just wait for those body shots

Like you I've scoured the internet for the big strings, and I've only found the Dingwall .170 string in EU. Closest paysons is bassdirect in UK, but the last time I ordered from them, they sent me the wrong order 3 times (which I had to pay customs for each time...), so I definitely can't recommend them.

That's great, but scandinavian customs import + tax will more than double the price of the set. It's really not tenable for scandi buyers (especially in my case I ended up paying more in imports than for the actual strings! and that was just for UK shipping)

Thanks, but you're not in EU though. Buying strings from the US and having to work with the Finnish customs is not what I'd consider "easily available". Seems that Bassdirect also doesn't ship to Finland, so I'm out of luck. I'll need to stick with DRs for the time being.

Plenty of good reasons to live in the Nordics that vastly outweight the hassle of trying to find the correct strings Don't need to own a car since the public transit gets me to work in just 20 minutes, I live just 9km from the city center and there's a nature reserve just 200m from my doorstep. Which is coincidentally a great place to film some bass videos Next time we get snow I'm bringing my Dingwall there but for now a video with [REDACTED] is all I have.

I've been ordering Dingwall strings thru Thomann, but I don't think they carry Paysons right? Or any other multiscale string outside Dingwalls for that matter

Absolutely drill the holes out a little and measure the screw. Dunlop screws are much bigger and longer than the Dingwall default set especially with Dingwall Matt finish basses. The finish is very sensitive to torque. I have seen in person some horror stories of the paint lifting and chipping in the area.

Thanks for the advice. Bought a drill and the installation was smooth.

The factory screw on (2021) NG3 was 5/8" from the factory pin, and the dunlop screw extends 7/8" from the dunlop pin. The dunlop screw is also bigger in diameter. I used a 3mm bit and drilled 7/8" into the hole before installing the straploks.

No, no Paysons. Another choice would be to use Elixir strings, these people are very good at what they do and are willing to make custom sets for you if you ask.

And how does that help. Geographically closer, yes. For the purpose of imports and taxes, makes no difference. At least here in Sweden.

Maybe there are some creative work around options for you thou. Like touring friends or packages sent as gifts? I don’t know how it works there but would anything like that help?
Perhaps even a bill purchase with a casual intent to redistribute and spread the burden of government fees.

I’ve been able to make a few international purchases that escaped bs additional expense a few times with social networking and getting a bit crafty.

I'm in the same situation trying to figure out the best way to consistently acquire string sets for non-standard tunings in the EU. I've narrowed it to Sansone strings located in Italy (you apparently have to order by contacting the guy directly through Facebook, no idea about the price), Invalid Link Removed located here in France (lots of multi-scale sets and singles listed although the price seems a little bit steep) and Pyramid in Germany (they do answer by mail pretty quickly and the price seems correct)

I've ordered strings directly from Optima and from Pyramid, both located in Germany. These people are able to put together custom string sets. My NG-3 6 string currently wears a set of Pyramid flatwounds.

Don't like Elixirs on bass unfortunately, I exclusively use the Optiwebs for guitar but Nanowebs take away this initial attack on the string that I'm really fond of. Thanks for the advice though!

Hahah, no worries I didn't take that too seriously! Gift packages are also a risk I wouldn't like to take, I'd love to do this all by the book.

I don't know about the others, but I used to use Skull Strings about 5 years ago but had to stop when I received multiple dead strings in a row :/ I've heard from others as well that they had issues with DOA strings at the time, no idea if they've fixed it yet.

So that would be +20 dollars on international shipping, +24% VAT +2.7% customs duty for musical instruments and accessories in Finland = 185$. Other nordic countries I believe have similar VAT rates, varying by just few percent

That doesn’t seem bad, I was expecting a higher customs charge. 2.7% is not much extra.

Yeah it's not horrible, but combined with the shipping costs and longer delivery times it makes it quite unappealing That being said I used to pay a lot more for the DRs I used to use for my 5-string since I had to buy those as singles More than 80€ per set before the artist discount was not sustainable to say the least, and they didn't even have the gauges I really wanted.
