I really like Sheldon's stainless strings... Great feel. The new nickel strings retain the character with a bit less air on the top and a bit more content in the low mids. They're just a little bit tighter, but only slightly. I've been using the nickels now for about 4 months. I thought there wasn't an alternative I'd enjoy, but they're both great options.

My most recent acquisition. I just couldn't wait until summer. I had to have a Dingwall 5er to get me through. Also my 5 string Fender usa/warmoth P's B string is sounding muddy to me.

Got a super deal at Bass Northwest in Seattle. I wanted the gloss black/maple with black with pearl pg but it recently sold.

i forgot to share the story from last weekend when I went to the local Long and Mcquade to ask them to order me the NG-2. The first clerk in the stores exact words…

"Aw man, I wish we could get those in, but they're so hard to get. They never make it to this side of the ocean. They're made in Holland and since they are so popular in Europe they get bought out there before they can get any shipped here. BUT WE HAVE THESE ERNIE BALL'S OVER HERE, THEY'RE NEARLY THE SAME"

Without punching him the face or shoving the Ibanez 6 string fretless up his ass and making him a scarecrow, I just plugged into an amp I've ben gassing for and didn't say anything else.

There was a pretty girl that worked there that was tearing down a Les Paul for a fresh set up. I figured she would know more than the drop out that I talked to earlier. Nope. I got the same answer, only she didn't tell me to try an Ernie Ball. I let her know that Sheldon and the boys are based 3,000 kms west of where we were standing in Saskatchewan. She just stared at me like I was an idiot.

Needless to say, I ordered my NG-2 direct from the factory.

I'm not sure why you were expecting them to be so informed. Its not like Barry sent out a big press release. Even if he did, its only been a couple days since they officially announced it and there is almost no way it would have filtered down to the lower level employees. Remember, the vast majority of people aren't gear nerds keeping up on every single bit of the latest news for every single brand.

Ordering direct was definitely the way to go, but try not to think too poorly on the clerks of a large music chain at this point.

I didn't expect them to know about the specific model I was asking about, but they told me Dingwall's in general were made in Holland and they couldn't get them. I understand one person being misinformed, but when more than 1 person gives me the same information; it leaves me to assume that whoever is running the store is misinformed and telling everyone the wrong thing to tell customers. Who if they believe what the store clerk told them will go home and tell their friends, creating a whole group of ignorance.

I simply believe that the guys in Saskatchewan get the credit they deserve for designing and building such fantastic instruments.

I agree with junk420's frustration. There are only a couple music store franchises in Canada, and limited product lines available up here for us to pick from. I don't expect them to know every brand under the sun, but they should be knowledgable on major guitar/bass brands made in Canada (which you can count on your fingers with some left over easily).

Our music stores suck on this side of the border, and sadly many of them fail to see the problem. It goes beyond brand knowledge as pricing, product selection, lessons, and special events are all sub-par from what is available in the states. It's a population issue and I know there are reasons for some of these things, but lack of product knowledge is not an easy thing to blame on a smaller population density.

Exactly! Thank you! Long and Mcquade thumps their chests about being a Canadian company. 1 Godin bass in the whole store and that was it as far as Canadian content.

I don't expect the Clerk to be a member on Mensa, he was doing a job I sure as hell don't have the patience for and I respect him for that. But at least make the effort to know more than your customer does, that's why people come to them in the first place.

Part of the reason for his lack of knowledge (a small, small part) is Long & McQuade isn't carried at all their stores due to other Dingwall dealers being in their area. I don't remember what that radius is but it is the reason Dingwall's don't show up on L & M's website. Sheldon is very protective of his dealer network and doesn't want to create conflicts. Axe Music is a large Dingwall dealer with stores in Calgary & Edmonton. That would explain why L & M doesn't have them there.

Now that doesn't excuse their lack of knowledge on what is in the market place. If they didn't know about Dingwall's, they should have looked looked it up instead of blowing smoke up your a**. Although the store may not have them I'm sure they have an inventory number in their system.
