If I hadn't bought a Ric, I'd have ordered:

Super P 4
Capri Orange, wenge/ wenge, with FD3 bridge PU, white pearl guard, no face dots, Luminlay side dots, D-tuner, chrome hardware.

I bought a Dingwall sight unseen, without ever having played one before. A fretless, no less, so my left hand technique had to be spot-on. I had no issues whatsoever. The difference is very, very small to your hands, only noticeable in certain positions and if you're chording high up the neck. People just assume the worst by looking the pictures, but once they pick one up and play, it's a different story. I also find it more ergonomic.

I was playing my ash/maple/maple SP4 today and thinking at one point how Ric-like the tone was - wonderful growl. From what I've been hearing about the all-wenge necks, I think they would enhance the growl in a very nice way. :) I'd love to hear what the P/FD3 pairing sound like in series mode - :eek: :eek: :eek:

Great pictures from tech support! Thanks guys! I've either put in P tones or switched the neck pups to series. I like the bigger bottom sound. Tonewise, the more I learn about my Dingwall tone circuits, the more I like them. I've got a couple with Blueqube switches, and that makes for a huge range.

Both the Glock and Aguilar pre's are nice, the Glock being better behaved. But I rarely use the pre amps, the hybrid tone control in the passive mode is very nice.

As for DAS, man, is there a cure? Since I've gone six string, I've been contemplating some horse trading, but the thought of actually parting with one brings me up short. If my lottery plan would work, just this once, I could see a flamed red X top AB2 sixer with unmarked, birds eye maple fretboard, luminlay side dots, extra strap lock. Something like that, anyway. It's not like I've thought about it too much.

I contacted tech support with a picture of the pickup selector and was told it's wired in parallel.

I'm thinking about a volume pot with a push/pull DPDT switch for series/parallel neck pickup option but have a couple questions.

Is the bridge pickup is better in series or left in parallel? Which way gives a fatter tone?

Also, has anyone tried a StellarTone Tone Styler on an ABZ? I like the tone control provided but the range of different rolloff points offered with the StellarTone with very little loss of mids is intriguing.

Series will give you the fatter low mid forward tone. Parallel gives you slightly wider top and bottom, but not as much low mid and might sounds slightly scooped to you. They're both great sounds, but the series is closer to what you get from a Precision and the parallel is closer to what you get with a Jazz, if that makes sense. The series also has more output.

Black isn't normally the first color I'd think of for a bass but this one really grabbed me. The bridge pickup is in parallel but wondered if the tone might be fatter in series.

That is helpful, thanks. The ABZ already has great clarity, I just wondered if the multiple caps & cutoff freqs in the StellarTone would provide a better way to adjust high freq roll off. But if it doesn't provide an audible improvement on this bass it's best just to leave it as is. The ABZ volume and tone seem to interact slightly to give good control over the voicing; pretty impressive passive setup.

Fatter, low mid forward, and fuller in the mids all sound good. I have single coils on my ash/maple Carvin SB5000 and that combination works well. Mid-forward pickups add presence to even out the ash/maple scoop.

It sounds like a series/parallel switch would be more useful for the neck pickup than the bridge. Both pickups in series (with their current parallel wiring) is my favorite setting because it punches and has good focus. The parallel-wired neck pickup seems fine here but having it in series would tighten up and add volume to the "both pickups in parallel" setting. A volume pot with DPDT series/parallel switch could be used for the neck pickup and perhaps a micro DPDT switch in the cavity would be fine for the bridge just to try both and leave it on the favorite. Thanks for your replies. I'm stoked about having a passive setup that is so tonally versatile.

As much as I love soloing the P pickups on my SJ/P's, kicking them into series with the fatty lets lets them rule any mix. :cool:

All good ideas. Due to limited cavity space, Sheldon used small push button units for coil-switching on this one:

I am DASing for a 4 string Super P. Preferably a tobacco burst with a white pearloid or amber pearloid pick guard, but if I ever get the funds, I won't be picky as to colors.

I am in the process of selling all my non Dingwall basses, aside from the used 2001MIM Fender P, which I use when playing in bars, etc where there isn't a real band area... don't want to risk someone spilling their beer, etc on a Dingwall!

I'm Dasing for that exact same bass in a Super P4, and dots instead of blocks (blocks would be the right call for a J though).

Oh wait, that's what I already have on order!:hyper:

VERY sweet!

I'm thinking about doing this with my Voodoo Prima. I do like the idea of keeping it original, and the Barts make it so universally useful. But, I really want that low- mid growl that is so typical of current models. So after I have my Super P4 delivered, I may get this mod started. I will probably just do a series in the neck, and series in the bridge. Either a Darkglass or Glockenlang pre. Passive tone control. Bing!

I've heard good things about the FD3 bridge with the split P, but I didn't order it. To be honest, I really love the look of a standard p. While I don't dislike the look with the added bridge pup, I find the standard P so elegant, especially a 4 string version.

I'm part of the choir - my sonic blue SP4 is amazingly good in all ways. It's just that after hearing so many nice pickups, my ears pay attention when Sheldon and Barry both say that the P and FD-3 are the best sounding pair so far. :)
