Well, the SJ/P4 in passive mode with the Reeves/MAS 110 Flex sounded wonderful. Any sloppiness of technique (fingers squeaking on string windings, etc...) was not so pronounced. It delivered everything tonally that I like to hear. The overall response was more tractable, like driving a Ford instead of a Ferrari. I didn't have to alter EQ radically or anything to sound good. For some reason, the difference between soloing the P pickup (aggressive) and having it in parallel with the J (smoother, more even response) was more apparent than in active mode. I rolled back the volume and passive tone control for a nice, supportive low-volume tone for extended improvisation while the word was being spoken. This was easier to do without accidentally playing a too-loud note that would draw unwanted attention. In summation, it sounded like I was playing a very nice, phat jazz bass - beautiful.
