Transparent white on ash body? Ash and wenge complement each other nicely. I prefer it tonally to ash/maple (had and sold 5 over the years). Other things being equal, there is a subtle but noticeable difference in the top end and low mids.

So far specs wise keeping to my budget is

ABZ 5 string
3 Pickups with Ptone in the neck
Passive with 3 S/P switches
Green to black burst (with slight custom on the burst colour)
Wenge/wenge neck
Luminlay dots on the side
No front dots but the D inlay ion the 12th fret (still tossibg between this or the speedo bars)

I've asked George to ask Sheldon (or maybe if Sheldon is watching he can answer) if it is possible to get custom Z carved profile neck on my ABZ (or an AB1) as I think that would be a better match to my hands - I've suffered from both carpel tunnel in both hands and have broken my left hand twice which is catching up with me as I grow old.

I do like the thought of a nice flamed maple AB1 but I do really like the sound of the ash body so even though an AB1 is only a few hundred more $$ I would option up an ash body anyway and I've had plenty of gloss basses so a nice satin would be fine and save me some $$.

There's a few other colours and options going though my head but thats about it for now. I have some SPJ5 specs as well that George has priced up, but the Ab series is winning so far.

No worries! We definitely should, I'm back in Aus now for a little while before I'll head off again, I'm sure.

Sounds like your spec is very similar to mine. Playing mine in passive mode will very likely give you a 95% idea of what your final spec would be like in terms of tone and playability.

I've been curious about the P-tone, saw many people raving about it in here who have them in AB's, but I chose to:
1. Keep this bass as was originally intended based upon what I'd played before (the ABII)
2. Spec a Super P/Super PJ for a second bass :D and make each bass the best at what they can do, rather than trying to have one that does it all.

And far out, now you've just got me gassing to build a 6 string...I HAVEN'T EVEN GOT MY FIRST DINGWALL YET, DAMMIT.

And I hear you about the P tone and keeping a bass "original" (so to speak). However I have never had the pleasure of playing an AB at all so I have no real idea of what it really will sound like, so I can get whatever I want and it will be awesome! Also, I would love a 2nd DW bass in the stable, so the 2nd one will be whatever I don't get first time around, but the time frame on that is so far out I can;t even guess when it will be. Although I suspect like many others once I have one I'll sell whatever I can to get another....

And when you get yorus I'd love to have a play mate. However if all goes well mine will be ordered long before that happens so it will be a bit late!

Thanks MD for the advice and the pic! I think after a bit more research whatever bass I get will include the sp switches!

Do you have any more links to recordings etc. with your bass you could put up?

I wouldn't necessarily call them more polite myself...more like "vintage" to the FD3's "modern", which entirely makes sense considering the difference between alnico and neodymium magnets.

The FDV's may in fact be a better compliment to my AB, which due to the ash/wenge combo is naturally very modern and harmonically bright...I just used the neck pickup in series for a session yesterday, and the added warmth and mid grind of these pickups combined with the signal chain made for an incredibly huge and rich tone that was absolutely perfect for the track.

I'll be happy to post it once the master comes back :thumbsup:

Absolutely agreed...evidently, ash/wenge is my favorite combination ;)

No problem!

Here are a few:

P Tone is series, direct through REDDI with minimal UAD processing:

P Tone and FD3 Bridge in series/series, parallel/series and series/parallel depending on the track through a Darkglass B7K, BDDI and REDDI:

Live straight through a passive Radial DI, both P Tone and P Tone/bridge in series:

Is there an ETA on these pickups at all?And the Ptone neck is also in the FDV lineup?

Good Morning fellow Dingwallers.

I'm going to order a SP4 soon so I am going to have to sacrifice my 2000 Voodoo. I wanted to see if there was any interest from club members first before I post her in the Classifieds:
