Thought you guys might be interested in this. I've re-designed and built some Super Fatty style pickups for my Z3. I've wanted to get into winding pickups for a long time (since about '81) and finally bought a winder, inspired by having never been happy with the stock Z3 pickups and needing a non-stock pickup for an Ibanez Musician. Anyway, I'm really happy with the results. Only have a clip of the neck pickup so far, comparing it to the original. The bass has replacements for all 3 now, but I haven't recorded them yet. I'll post another clip when I get the time.

My original pickups were faulty and Sheldon replaced them, leaving me with the faulty set, which I dismantled and re-engineered. The stock pickups are unbalanced between the two coils, so the A, D and G are too thin compared to the B and E (which I also think are a little too muddy). I haven't tried these in parallel and don't think these will sound good that way, but I didn't like the originals in parallel anyway, so that's not an issue. See what you think. For me this has gone from a great bass, that never quite lived up to its potential, to an absolutely superb sounding bass, that is everything I wanted a Dingwall to be.



All three pickups are my re-designs and the neck one has my first go at making my own covers.

Neither of them have been sold. It was difficult trying to tell anyone what they look like. I think this is an exceptional looking bass, but there was no way to describe to anyone how it would turn out. And with the new FDV pickups it should sound incredible. I initially ordered the ABII as a 4-string. My wife made me change it to a 5 as she knew I would keep it if I got the 4 - she knows me too well. They both have Luminlay side dots.

"Awesome" would suffice, I'd think! ;) Looks like a nice redwood top, and I'm glad Barry suggested going for the contrast inlay on mine, it really does looks like great (and is super-flamed, too, by the look of it). Seems like we've got some similar flaming pattern on the top going on, with it on the bottom and up near the horns with a non-/less-flamed section around the base of the neck.

With the fully-loaded electronics on that AB2, whoever nabs it should be easily able to get whatever sounds they're looking for out of it! :D

It has the 3-band Glockenklang with switches whereas the ABZ has the Darkglass pre with switches. I am told the new FDV pickups should give it a more Vintage tone. Sheldon suggested the contrast to showcase the top. I looked long and hard at the tops in order to decide as there were several beautiful choices.

Well, sucks that it isn't sold / wasn't a pre-order. Someone is going to end up with a hell of a nice bass.
I think pretty much any day now my build confirmation is going to happen. So I need to have a talk with myself and see what if what I spec'd out some 6+ months ago is still what I want.

I just found something out, and I thought I'd share it here with the group.
One of my bands had a pretty awesome gig last night. One of the better live band venues around here is closing down in the next couple of months. Big commercial stuff is going in, so they're going to rip it all down and put in Applebees, an office complex yadda yadda. Pretty crappy.
I of course played my Dingwalls. Energy was through the roof - I think everyone was giving it that much more since this place only has a couple of months left. At the end of the show, things were going a bit off the hook. It kind of turned into a mini open jam, which was weird. I haven't played any cover tunes in many years (being in two original bands now, and have been in original only bands for at least 10 years), so I was little shaky.
A drummer hops up on stage, a bassist friend of mine grabs a guitar, and I (ask and then use) his bass rig. We jam through a few Nirvana and Pantera tunes. I was somewhat drunk at this time, and while I know a lot of these songs to hear them, there was no way I actually knew the bass lines. Oh well.

Anyway, to bring this story around to the end of things... I posted about how fun the whole show was last night etc. etc., and it turns out, the drummer that jumped up on stage was Aaron Burckhard! At first, the name didn't mean much of anything to me, but it turns out that he was the original drummer for Nirvana. Pretty sweet moment in time for me heh. Now, I'm not really into Nirvana, but having played with someone who was at the start of something undoubtedly big in music, was definitely a memory I'll be happy to carry around.

Oh yes, I know I agonized over the choices too. But what I now think looking at these really different speced basses is that it is not worth too much agonizing over the details as both are amazing and I could grab either and be really happy.

The only thing I'm going back and forth on is Glockenklang (a known good pre that I enjoy in my AB1s) or go with the DG. I think I have about 2 more weeks to figure it out. Everything else that I spec'd out, I'm still very happy with and don't intend on changing.

I also need to get in line for a 5 string purple AB1 or AB2. Probably next month I'll do that once we get the house buying stuff behind us. :)

That is cool that you got to jam with a named musician. I bet that was fun! I have had the opportunity in my life to play with two different members of popular top recording artist/touring bands. What I was pleased to see is that neither had any kind of "Hey I am the top dog" type attitude by looked down on me because I was more of a hobbyist. They just smiled and settled into doing their thing, grooving right along and were two of the nicest people you could ever want to meet. I did have the opportunity to go pro about 30 years ago - glad I didn't actually. I think at the time I still didn't have the needed balance to do so.

It was definitely a cool bit of stage time for me. Like your experiences, this guy was just totally chill (and a good bit more drunk than I) and hammering out some tunes for us to mess around with. He had absolutely no attitude about it, just had a ton of fun. It was also just fun for the sake of fun - we weren't really performing per se. It felt like the four of us ended up in an audition or rehearsal together.
