Dingwall Owners Club

The only thing I'm going back and forth on is Glockenklang (a known good pre that I enjoy in my AB1s) or go with the DG. I think I have about 2 more weeks to figure it out. Everything else that I spec'd out, I'm still very happy with and don't intend on changing.

I also need to get in line for a 5 string purple AB1 or AB2. Probably next month I'll do that once we get the house buying stuff behind us. :)

I went back and forth on the Glock-DG preamp decision with my new SJ5 x3 custom order for a LONG time. The Z3 I bought last year has a Glock and I really like the transparency. I tried one of Sheldon NG2 display basses he had at NAMM this year which has the DG pre and liked it too. I thought it sounded more colored and aggressive - but in a good way. I describe it as a Music Man on steroids. Anyway, I finely decided to go with a Glock again. My reasoning was - "why mess with a good thing?" Plus, I can get a pretty good Music Man sound when switching to the bridge-middle pick ups with the x3 on both my Z3 and SJ5. Anyway, I'll soon be getting my Music Man on steroids - I'm supposed to take delivery of an NG2 four-string this month. We will see...

Do either of these preamps have a passive option? I ask because my passive SJ5XXX has 4 wonderful and useable tones, that way you can have even more tonal options. In my case, I don't miss an on-board preamp (Country and Classic Rock).
The Glock preamp can be opted out with an active / passive switch. What I find is that the Glock, when set flat, is virtually the same as passive.

Also, the nice thing about the Glock is that the treble knob still works like a regular tone knob in passive.

Yup. The glock is awesome. The dg as arrowsun said is awesome too. But currently in my trains of thought. I'll happily buy A bass with a glock in it( having DAS right now on one :0) but when I spec a new build its gotta be a glock!
Ive never enjoyed playing with tones as much as I do with both my basses.(sj5,Z3)
Between the 4 way pick up selector and the push pull active/ passive. And the 3 band or tone knob( in passive) there is sooooo much versatility.

DFL!!!!!! Lol.

Yeah. I enjoy the glock pre in both of my AB1's. I've tried other DG loaded basses and liked the pre in those, but I'm not sure for my own build which way to go. Since the 6 stringers can't get a P-tone, I'm wondering if the DG will help me bring in some of the tone I'd like. Of course, I could just dial it in as new presets on my Axe-Fx II quite easily enough as well. Here is basically the build I haev in queue:

Afterburner 1, 6 string, green to black burst over a flamed maple top
Maple neck, Wenge fingerboard, blacked out heel + headstock (wish I could convince myself to swing for the full wenge - man that's expensive wood), no inlays
3x FD3 pickups with 3x Series/Parallel switches
Glockenklang pre
Drop tuner on B string
Luminlay side dots

Thanks for all your thoughts so far on Glock vs DG pres :). I should hit Youtube today and listen to some clips to try to make my final decision.

Oh the wenge. It's so nice. If you do spring for it you can get away with out blacking out the h and h in my opinion.
I'm looking forward to seeing your green to black on the f maple. Dingwall just slays those finishes. Are you gonna bleach first?

My Z3 build is gonna be a nat to green burst!!!! Super excited about this one. And in all honesty. After playing these super fatties I have in my Z I have really fallen for them. I know I love Fd3s but these super fats are also really killer to the point of consideration on the new build.

Yeah, if I can get the wenge neck it'll be about $300 more expensive, when I drop the blacked out option.

I debated a little bit on the bleaching, but I think it'll make the finish brighter than I'm shooting for, which is pretty much this (color wise):

I'm already  planning out the next one. I'd like to try a Z to see if I like that neck profile, though I'm pretty sure it'll be a 5 string AB 1 or AB 2 in trans-purple :p

I still wish I could have spent a little more time with the Dark Glass-equipped NG at BeBass's booth earlier this year. I was unable to form any impressions at all. Too little time, too noisy, and the amp rig was very different than mine... :rollno:

I brought home a ng2 5 for a week and had some fun with it.
I liked it but when playing that neck in comparison to a Canadian dingwall....... There just isn't one. I'd like to try a 4 string. That said, the dg is really cool and has amazing tones but the pristine beauty of the glock is unparalleled.

Lol yeah. I've got the next 3 planned out........ I kinda hope I shift my priorities thought before they happen as it's just a little rediculous for me to even be considering. Maybe prioritize such things as my mortgage, etc.

That's a nice green. I like the bass d Blakley did earlier this year. It's similar to that.

Here's what I'm going for with my Z only instead of the birds eye I'm doing a Zirricote fb. And a wenge neck.

And believe me. Going from an Ab to a Z..... At first I was like.

Hmmmm..... Different.

And then it was like. WHOOA!!!
THIS IS AWESOME!!!

Going back to the Ab was like oh yeah..... This is familiar and soooo sweet and then back to the Z was like.

WHOOA!!!
THIS IS AWESOME!!!

And then back...... Lol. Both so awesome.

Good points. I agree the Glock is just like passive when set flat. When active there is lots of EQ available. And it is a super clean pre. The Darkglass is definitely more aggressive. It is actually what I am more used to, but I like them both. I honestly think I could pick up a Dingwall with either pre and walk right into a gig and be happy. With 3x pickups and switches there is enough versatility for just about anything.

Hey guys,

I'm seriously close to pulling the trigger on a Z3X with the Tone Capsule. I stupidly let my AB1 3X go awhile ago and have been regretting it. I know what a slamming tone the AB 1 had...my question is what difference (if any) can I expect for a dual density Z3? Thanks fellas.

Tone wise or feeling wise? I'm pretty sure the neck profile is noticeably different between the AB and Z series (as is the body shape of course).

Tone wise, outfitted with the same electronics, well, then you have to ask if you are in the "wood matters" or "wood doesn't matter" club :). I'm not going to open that can'o'worms in this thread with my personal feelings on it. But, you also have different options on each line to consider as well.

It's not blue is it???? Lol.
SOLD - Dingwall z3

I'd say richness and depth perhaps?!?

Just thought I'd through this out there.

I thought it was priced quite well.

There was this AB2 which I almost pulled the trigger on. Price was pretty good:
dingwall

Couldn't really tell the finish from the photos, and the seller went totally dark on me which gave me some cold feet at pulling the trigger.

I'm watching this one to see if GC knocks a few hundred off the sticker:

Yeah, mostly considering the tone but certainly would welcome opinions on the feel, especially the neck. My AB1 neck was very slim front to back and have heard the Z's are even more so.

I've had the DG preamp in a few basses now and know that it can exert its voicing but, yes, was wondering the subtleties of what the different woods "may" bring. Definitely not trying to bait anyone into a "wood lives matter" argument.
