Looks like the 4 string is 34"-35", and 5 string is 34"-36"...

Why not do the Dingwall scale lengths, if not an even longer scale???

I understand offering something different than Dingwall, but if there was a 34"-37" bass in this under 1k USD range it'd be crazy popular! Just my opinion though.

They're likely sticking to scales that can be accommodated by stock string sets.

This may sound odd but I really like seeing other companies doing multiscale builds. Just goes to show how far ahead of the curve Sheldon was! Plus, there is a possibility of those builds leading players to Dingwall.

My FDV pickups just arrived from Canada. Going for an old school alnico vibe in my SJ5. They will replace my FD3 pickups. My SJ5 has a Glock pre. Opinions on something other than a Glock to go with these more vintage pickups? The Glock is very transparent and has a passive option so I'm hoping its a good match....

The "more vintage" option would be to go strictly passive.

I absolutely love the FDVs with the Darkglass but did have one 3x FDV with the Glock. I don't think any are a bad choice and think I would go with the Glock over the just passive option although the simplicity of just passive is attractive.

The FDV's are going into my custom exotic SJ5 x3. I chose all the woods on that bass, including the wenge neck and fb. I really like the transparency of the Glock in that bass. I let's me hear more of the wood tones I designed into the bass. I recently switched out the Glock for the Darkglass pre in my custom exotic Z3 because I fell in love with that sound in my NG2. The DG is more colored than the Glock, but in a good way if you want a more aggressive tone, especially in the low and high mid spectrum. Plus I like the more usable EQ centering on the tone pots with the DG, especially the bass pot.
Anyway, my goal for the SJ5 is to set it apart from a tone standpoint from my Z3 and NG2 - more of a traditional Fender Jazz tone befitting the "Super Jazz" label. I'm hoping the alnico FDVs with the stock Glock pre will do the trick.

All this talk of FDVs. I want 3-D printed shells for the older basses! Maybe its time to buy a 3-D printer... of course, without the windings (which is probably what they really don't have time for), I won't get far.

This in an email from Dingwall (tech) today in response to my inquiry about what the "V" in "FDV" stands for. I thought it stood for "vintage" - turns out, well, sort of:

"The 'V' stands for 5 as in alnico 5 (V). The FDV is our most vintage sounding pickup although don't expect it to sound like a single coil Fender pickup. It has a nice big round tone, especially if it is wired in series mode. Perhaps a little more single coil sounding when wired parallel. Output wise they are about the same as an FD3. They are our favorite pickup and we are putting them in almost everything now."

I wonder how Sheldon decided on 37" to 34" on the long scale, and 35" to 32" on his "short" scale? I think both are the perfect multi-scales. I tried an Ibanez, which has a 35.5" to 33.6" (5 string). I absolutely prefer the larger scale spread on the Dingwalls. After playing the Ibanez, my thought was "what's the point?" Might as well buy a single scale.

Keep an eye on the classifieds...NG-2s show up now and then, and you can ask the sellers if they're interested in a trade or trade+cash deal. You can set up email/notification alerts in your profile so you can get to the posts quickly. NG-2s and Combustions tend to sell/trade quickly here, so using the keyword alerts is a good idea.

You could also put up your own "for trade" offer with the bass you're looking to trade and specify that you're looking for a Dingwall. You'd have to become a TB supporting member for that, though.

The Glock pre switches to passive mode when you pull the volume knob up, and the treble pot becomes a "tone" pot.

You can also procure a supporting membership, after which you can post your own thread in the classified section under basses for sale, listing your bass for trade, and specify your desire to trade for an NG-2 4/5 string.

I don't think you can change the internal wiring on those pickups. Two of the wires are connected to the coils and the third one (the clear?) is a shield ground (I think, not sure). You need the 4L (four-lead) pickups if you want to access the coils separately and change them from parallel to series - or the Mach II, which is wired permanently in series.

My NG-2 is starting to get some mojo on it, nice to see a bass broken in the way *I* play since this is the first bass I had bought new since picking my first MIM P-Bass off the rack at Guitar Center in 2002. Think I'm gonna hang onto her forever. Can't wait for my new pickups to get in!

Also, finally switched from Kalium bridge cables to Payson strings - highly recommend them. They feel great, sound killer, and the service/communication is lightyears better.

EDIT: ALSO also, @TheEmptyCell - I had the pickguards for my NG-2 done by Pickguardian. Couldn't be more pleased with how they came out. I think I've posted photos in here but if not I'll dig some up when I'm home from work.
