You would be amazed at how many people get a kick out of those number stickers. And at how many people have asked if I'd make them a set, even though they (and I) don't need numbers any more than I need dots.

Also, fwiw, I made every sticker on my bass.

I love that!
I have no problem putting cool stickers on a bass.
I just don't like fake blocks or fake brand name stickers.
Fake is lame, individualism is cool

If you or your fans are over about seventeen, yeah.

That's the immediate association, kid stuff.

If the stickers are covering up something worse or holding the bass together, on the other hand, they might be a good call.

Sometimes they can protect wear-prone areas of the finish, but they still look trashy. I tried that a few times but couldn't live with it.

On the other hand, maybe a trashy look is what you're after.

Not me, never, even when I was a kid.

Is it the material of the stickers or the appearance of them? Arguably, it could have a negative effect on the sound...maybe not.

You could always paint a your instrument to look like it was covered in stickers.

Ultimately, the design you like is the right one for you. It's in the eye of the beholder just as music is in the ear. Would you have other people choose your music for you too?

Being self aware enough to weigh the pros and cons is a good thing, allowing yourself to be lead by the nose by those that disagree with your choices, is not.

I think as long as you have a paint job on your bass (vs a trans finish) you are good to go. As a musician wood is sacred! don't cover up nice grain.
there is so much talk about beaters, but while the two basses I own with stickers are cheap, I wouldnt call them beaters. okay maybe the fretless is a beater, but the 5 is modded into a real sleeper bass.
No its not trashy, having a boutique bass and forgetting that you learned to play on a squier is trashy.

I wouldn't own a ferrari, but if I did, yes, I would, because I think ferraris already look kinda trashy.

That's actually the exact analogy I was going to make.

And just like tatoos I sometimes think it's a cool look even if it's not my thing. It depends on context. Depending on what the sticker connotes it can also give people a positive or negative impression right off the bat just like tattoos (or bumper stickers on cars) often do.

Trashy is a subjective thing. If you like it, do it. If you don't then don't.

I only put stickers on my basses if they have a pickguard. at this time I have two Ibanez basses that do not have pickguards so no stickers for me.

Nope, I don't think they do. Kind of adds character/personality. I don't have stickers on my guitars, but that's only because I am so scatterbrained, that I would be taking them on and off so much it would probably look nasty with all the tears and glue. But that's just me.

If you go with vinyl, you'll get a brighter tone. Nylon gives more lo-mid thump. Fabric...well, just don't go there.

You might be better off going to a custom shop so the craftsman can help you find the proper tonestickers for your genre.

+1, bang on. I never cared much for tats, but I started dating a woman who has a bunch a couple years ago. Hers are very well-done, not badly placed, and most of them make sense to me.

I rocked a sticker-covered bass back in the day. I wouldn't now myself, but sometimes it just works in the right context.

for me stickers = PUNK ROCK!! (That is a good thing...) bringing back the memories of the old days where you didn't care what your bass looked like or sounded like.

Now that I am older, I want a bass that sounds like I care, but I don't mind if it looks like I don't. Would I sticker up my 72 P bass? No. It is all stock right now, and has a different mojo... I did have some stickers on my Charvel, but took them off. I plan on getting a bass one day with a run of the mill finish to make it a punk bass again. Probably won't spend too much money on it. I tend to end up in the mosh pit with my bass on sometimes, so I need one that I don't care about if it breaks...tha tone will be my sticker bass
