Does class D have the Heft of SS

TBH I've felt the same about many of your posts. You have people trying to help you and in return you're dismissive, as ig you have an understanding when all you seem to have are beliefs based at best on anecdotal evidence vs. actual experience. You don't seem to appreciate actual experience so... cool.

As a former owner of three original B-15 combo and a couple of LMII heads the idea that the Ampeg is louder, barring some silliness with the cab, was pretty funny. Thanks.
:D

I am agreeing you with the Ampeg vs mb thing!
But it proves my point some say there is something wrong with class d!

What are you trying to help me with? I am actually impartial I'm defending the views of others against yours. You seem to think your totally right.
Give me evidence or something instead of just opinion.

I'm wanting answers or theories on why some think class d amps are weaker.

And this is where the problem lay. Most people don't think logically and humans have tried to understand how people think forever, yet they still don't really have a clue. The best they've done is tame down some of the thinking problems with drugs. You will not find answers to why people think anything here. Or anywhere. Not picking on anyone; the human variable overshadows all the facts.

Mr cash, and there it is, why can't low, mid priced technology compete with mid priced technology from the 90's? In most everyone's world, low priced current technology compete's very well, most mid priced, quite a bit better. Pay a bit more, even better. I currently own an even mix of Class D and non class D amps, so no bias here. Just done with someone who has biased opinions that appear to be only substantiated by himself and apparently not willing to pay the very reasonable price of the vast amount of class D amps available to us today. By the way I would be interested in knowing what the very good class D amp you have is?

That is reasonable.
I just wanted general opinions. But I felt like people are trying to tell me there opinion as fact, so I have put forward what the other side think. I tried to explain its not always my opinion.
Some members have went deeper with the science. I appreciate that I have learnt something. It is still not clear why some are on the other side of the fence on class d.

People say all sorts of things. Often completely lacking in insight. I'm a professional bassist who's been gigging since the mid-70's. On its own that means little. But I've also spent a ton of time learning my craft which included learning how everything works together. So I've had hands on experience with most of what's been available from before then to now. You know what the most frequent problem I've seen people run into?

The bassist.
:D

Yep, more often than not people who at best know just enough to be dangerous make accusations about the cause of problems they run into when the actual problem is they don't know what they're doing.

Drawing conclusions prior to attaining a real understanding is not a good look. Neither is relating stories or links that don't support bad conclusions.

So you're defending the views of others against mine? You're already at a disadvantage... I KNOW why I have the opinions I do. You aren't in those other folks' heads and their view could be completely based on ignorance. Better you than me.
;)

What no no you have me all wrong there. I am unbiased and have had others opinions put as fact. only some of my replies have been my opinion, the others are anecdotal evidence that some are so keen to write off. Which is wrong as that opinion is very large.

So a largely held opinion shouldn't be written off?

I really hope you know better than what you're saying.

It's all went a bit wrong in the thread hadn't it.
I'm not arguing with anyone more challenging others opinions in the hope that I get good answers.
A good answer to me is one I'm not made a fool of for asking but educated with science, evidence or your own experience.

Strangely enough that's what you've been getting. Are you not seeing that?

Yes. And of course I get that, but plenty say you can gig the markbass combo on its own where most will say the b15 is not a gigging amp.

I wouldn't say that, in fact I'd say keep the stage volume low, let the sound engineer control the volumes for the audience. Wear IEMs. Sometimes that doesn't go over well here ;)

And he says in the thread he tried them with the same cab!

He also said it wasn't scientific. It sounded like it was based on knob position or personal opinion if the amp sounded more pushed at a certain volume level. Volume knobs are not calibrated to each other so one can't go by position. Some cabs can't go louder than a certain level even if they can still handle more power/watts than. Frequency of the test signals ... frequency response of the "pre-amp". There are many things that can account for the level seeming to be the same or different.

I thought I answered this but I guess it didn't get posted.

Under conditions of limited power supply capacity, an SMPS powered class D amp would likely exhibit better performance than an equivalent line frequency powered linear amp because the difference in efficiency (and power factor of the power supply) places less demands on the power source. The only possible challenge is if the voltage drops below what's safe for the amp (typically about 105 volts), the SMPS/class D amp will shut down to protect against damage (if well designed) but the linear amp might continue working until it possibly blows up. Pick which failure (fault) mode suits your personal preference.
Thanks, Andy. I realize this has been an unruly thread and thought the question might have gotten lost. Appreciate you taking the time to answer and for always being so generous in sharing your expertise with us.

Going to the top to get to the bottom of something is British sense of humour.

I suggest it is because they are comparing bass amplifiers with preamp sections, and not strictly class D power amplifiers. One would have to compare only rack mount power amps of different class for that. I suspect (but that's all it is) that you'd find this one is better, that one worse just like all amp comparisons regardless of class.

I'm my opinion.... apart from the fact that I'd think that is all in the design rather than the actual 'type' of power amp in it.... the good quality class D amps I've had. ..remember. .this is all IN MY OPINION, I think have had more "heft" than any typical "old style" solid state amp I've used.
I've used all tube amps from the start. Dad bought me a Aus made 100w all tube amp and matching 215 cab to go with it back when I was 13 y.o. C.1975 and for the life of me, I couldn't find ANY solid state amos that'd give me the feel n tone I liked. Ever.
Until I tried a Mark Bass LMII then GB Shuttles..these gave me the "feeling" of solidity that I was used to.
So my vote goes to a definite yes to the OP's question.

Nobody takes a back seat to me in their love for the B-15, but I've owned two, still have one, and I used to own one of those CMD 121p Markbass combos, and the Markbass combo was clearly louder. Was not even close. The B-15's sounded better and that's why I still have one and don't have any Markbass gear anymore, but let's get real...the Markbass combo has over 10x the RMS wattage!
