If I recall correctly, according to the NASA guy on guitargeek.com, playing in certain, or no footwear might very well have an actual effect on the amount of noise that your body creates and transfers to your bass. Background EM radiation is supposedly a major factor in noise from unshielded instruments, and your body acts as a conductor, so the way in which your body is grounded will affect the level of noise in the electronics. The singer in my band has a tendency to sing barefoot so as not to get shocked from the mic, but I will have to do some blind tests to determine whether or not it affects the sound of the PA.:smug:

This is a little of topic, but again illustrates that there might be a point in listening to those who know what they are dealing with. I am not an engineer, so I am very appreciative of those who can help me avoiding getting ripped off (which I do not find to be an unreasonable term in this particular case). Thanks guys!:D

Jimmy, nice motto, I am beginning to suspect that your 'bassmoney' has generally been well spent.:)

If I'm playing someplace that has a neonlight buzz or ground problem that can't be figured out before gig time I just keep a hand on the strings and approach the mic cautiously, that fixes it. Am I a superconductor or a superground? :D

You're just a super swell guy.:D

Actually, and again remember that I am quoting from memory, the body usually doesn't do a very good job of grounding unless you are playing barefoot standing on a bunch of water pipes going to ground. I think the explanation was something about the way in which the EM is transferred, and actually touching the metal of the instruments is supposedly quieter. If that is the case then of course footwear would not have a very big effect, but certainly a bigger one than a fancy cord. Perhaps there is a market for audio grade Converse All Stars?:p

I always wondered what North Dakota is like. Do they really talk like they do in the movie " Fargo " ?
You betcha. :p And folks sound pretty much the same in Minnesootah.
I've only played in 43 states, but also two Mexican states, and four Canadian provinces gets me to 49 in North America.

Not all Minnesotans and Dakotans talk like that, but a lot do.

Never really thought to figure out how many states I've played in...BRB...

EDIT: 45 states. Plus 3 cities in Mexico, and 4 in Canada in 3 provinces.

These cable threads (power cables especially) are usually entertaining. Thanks for keeping it mainly civil, despite the spirited "debate", if I may use the term.

Reading these threads is always instructive when considering how easily many of us (all of us, in the wrong circumstances) can be gloriously, magnificently wrong. The example that jumped out at me just was the classic "you can't comment on this until you've tried it" fallacy. I haven't tried breathing pure ammonia for 20 minutes either, but I know what I'd say to someone who was recommending it as a cure for a head cold. :D

I'm glad you said it. I was going to, but what I was typing wasn't coming out so clean. :D I totally agree it's a fallacy that you have to personally have experience with something to know about it. Yet it's repeated and repeated. Oh well.

TB does have "Club" threads. Club threads are good for people who just want to share they bought something and like it.

If this thread was titled
"ESP MusicCord Club"
then I probably would have ignored it. Instead my natural tendency is to warn people to think critical about power cords. Not just ESP cords

$130 can make a big difference in the sound of a rig. Like buying a better driver and cabinet or adding a midrange driver. Or many other ways - but not for a power cord.

+1

I'm from there although moved far away at 19. Lost most of the accent but still catch myself now and then. It rubs off when I go back to visit family, then goes away again. Funny how it never really totally leaves you though.

I would agree with you except when it comes to sex. Really have to experience it, ALOT, before you actually know it. Practice does make perfect. Which reminds me of an old Woody Allen/Diane Keaton line from " Sleeper "
Diane: " Would you like to perform sex with me ? "
Woody: " Well, I don't think I'm up for a performance, but I'd
be happy to rehearse with you. "

Ah, so that's what he was doing with his daughter...rehearsing with her. Makes total sense now.

AAAAnnnnnnnndddddddd.................that'll kill it.

I love you in the spirit of Dudley Moore but I'm bumpin' this in the hopes of going 50 pages. Scientific theory/fact out the window, people need to notice this so they don't get taken. :D

My other motto is anything you get you have to practice it. You can't just try an amp out in a store. You need to try for for at least a month at some real venues. But you don't need to try a power cord out for a month. There's nothing there. It isn't going to get better.

If you buy one, you got ripped off. If you sell them, you are ripping people off. If you allow your name to be used to sell these to people, you are either ripping people off or you don't know enough about electricicals to know that you're ripping people off.

I think it gets even worse: by putting your name beside this kind of miraculous-until-proven-otherwise gadgets you are lowering the standard of your endorsements and probably hurting the image of other companies involved in true, actual research.

It is my humble opinion that talented artists should outgrow the "IT'S ALL ABOUT ART NOT COLD SCIENCE!!111" attitude and use a sensible approach when talking about things not made by musicians. Then again, I'm a foolish aspiring player son of a long-time industrial engineer and that must be one hell of a bias.
