So I was just thinking about the time I got too drunk to play a gig (not a proud moment I might add; I'll get to that in a second) and thought it might be interesting to see if anyone else learned the hard way that drinking excessively before a gig is a bad move... Not trying to start an AA meeting or anything, just thought it'd be interesting! My shame story below:
When I was about 15, both of my old bands were playing a NYE gig at a friend's house (it was actually a helicopter hanger converted into a stage/skate ramp; his family were pretty well off!) One of my bands (Moneyshot) opening the show and the other (The Angry Pirates) headlining. During the Moneyshot set, me and the guitarist, with reckless bravado, were swigging copious amounts of bourbon between songs. Like I said, I was 15.. And we were a glam band so we thought we were cool.. Mistake No.1.
Needless to say by the time my second set came around, I was in no fit state to stand up, never mind play bass for and hour and a half! Didn't stop me trying though! Mistake No.2. I got as far as plugging in before retreating backstage to spew for a few hours while a mate stepped in who was almost as drunk as me..
I don't think I need to explain the 'fallout' the next day, it's pretty obvious that my band, and everyone else were a mixture of p***ed off and disappointed!
A respect for alcohol before/during gigs was learned of course and now debauchery is reserved for after the show!
Anyone else??
