Half of the songs mentioned don't have bass solos! A prominent bass part or riff does not a solo make.

But to the discussion, I would like to add 'Nivram' by the Shadows. Jet Harris deserves to be more well known than he is, very much the pioneer.

i can think of two examples, the who's my generation and aeroplane by the rhcp's. imo these qualify as songs and famous.

I'm not a huge Musicman bass fan, but those 2 songs have some killer sounds from that bass.

The first bass solo to really make me take notice was done by Larry Graham on "The Jam," by Graham Central Station.

+1 for "Head East" That breakdown section with just vocals and a more freeform bassline has always been referred to as "the bass solo" in every band I've played it in.
I'll give "The chain" by Fleetwood Mac a tentative yes. It's really just the bassline for the end part of the tune but he does bring it in solo with a little hi-hat in the background.

Bulls on Parade -- Rage Against the Machine. Bass solo just before the guitar solo.

RATM's song "Calm like a Bomb" also has a really fun bass intro solo, but I don't think that song was ever a single so I don't know if it meets your definition of "famous".

It's not one of their hits but it's among one of their more popular songs that are not hits. Red and the Black by Blue Oyster Cult definitely has a small solo part in.

There's lots to chose from...I haven't seen it mentioned yet, but "Slow Ride" by Foghat was always one of my favorites!!
