Probably some

Probably someone mentioned in these threads:

One thread from 2008, and the other specifically about lead guitarists.

A very difficult to compile Baker's Dozen, in no particular order:

  1. John Martyn
  2. Frank Zappa
  3. Adrian Belew
  4. Phil Manzanera
  5. Bill Nelson
  6. Tim Hardin
  7. Tom Verlaine
  8. Al Di Meola
  9. Andres Segovia
  10. Michael Hedges
  11. Richard Thompson
  12. Gary Moore
  13. Vini Reilly
This is a great list. Richard Thompson may be the greatest guitar player Britain has ever produced. The inclusion of Bill Nelson, Gary More, and Frank Zappa are also notable. Real innovators, and masters of their craft.

I'd add just a few:
Claudio Sanchez
Pat Metheny
David Linley
Ollie Halsall

Some of my favs have already been listed, like Jimi, Jeff Beck, and Alex Lifeson.

Similar to the OP, Syd Barrett is very influential for me.

I am also a massive fan of J. Mascis, Stephen Malkmus, and Ronald Jones (briefly in the Flaming Lips, he was on Transmissions from the Satellite Heart and Clouds Taste Metallic, easily my two favourite Lips albums).

Meh, a guitarist is a guitarist. Like Keith Richards mused…
“It’s like, you can’t go into a shop, and ask for a “lead guitar.” You’re a guitar player, and you play a guitar.”

He, in particular, is about blurring any roles. There are some players whose skills and strengths lie in a more chordal direction, and in that realm are far more accomplished than any flash ‘dweedly dweedly’ player, yet they are not tagged as a “rhythm” player.

A lot of good mentions so far.

Paul Gilbert has been on my heavy rotation list lately. He’s a fantastic guy in interviews.

A lot of classics and go-to metal names on my list, like Randy and Dimebag. Dave and Marty just for their work on Rust in Peace.
