Fearless cabs Whats the Hype??

OH HO HO............ I'm your huckleberry.

I'm in possession of one of them 'pegasuses'. I've got a 53 pound F215 and I'm in Sedona/Verde Valley. If you've got a place to open up this rainbow sparkle fantasy machine, I will drive it to your house and we will see what we can see. I've only been able to play this amp in anger on the day I bought it and I would really.. really.. like to open this thing all the way up again. :jawdrop:

Even better, I'll be in Prescott tomorrow so I'll pm you. (someone mentioned that you're in Prescott?) If that's inconvenient, I'm gigging across the mountain from you in the VV for almost a dozen weekend dates throughout the end of the year including a Halloween gig in Jerome.

That said.. I'm not doing anything fancy with this cab; I can't play it LOUD at gigs, home or at my practice space and I'm a middling player in a dance-y CRCB who buys the best used gear I can afford. I might not be the best example of what this Pegasus can do. Still, I'd love to show it off as my band-mates recognize that I sound great and sit well in the mix but don't really appreciate that for all intents and purposes.. my cabinet is mythical. At my normal gig bartenders only care about volume and your average audience can't tell the difference between amazing, average and not good enough.

Re your OP question, 'Is it hype'? No.

Now tell me this, would a quality full-range PA cab put you in the same vibe as these fEARless cabs?

Absolutely - in fact for certain values of "quality" followed up with pro level operational skills you will get better results. But it won't be a PA cab - it will be a PA stack [at the least a pro grade PA sub cab and a pro grade multiway top cab] and you need to plan on spending serious bucks and hauling more weight versus a GB rig.

This would work I think...

The simple beauty of my two fEARful - to me - was that I could actually build my own cab that was getting rave reviews from the bottom dwelling community.
My build was perhaps 3 years ago, and my spread-out costs amounted to under $600 for a 15/6 and 15 sub. More than anything - even the tone and volume - was my complete excitement, pride, and satisfaction that I built this awesome rig on my own, starting with that 5' x 5' sheet of baltic birch and locktite glue.

I know that Dave has gone on to 'refine' and further perfect and cook his recipe with the fEARless line, but there IS something magical to that setup, isn't there? I fall in love with mine every time I play it. It's why I also use both cabs no matter if I'm in a coffee house or on a festival stage. I've even recently taken to playing the 15sub by itself in rehearsal to keep volume down while we're doing pre-prod test multi-tracks, and have love doing that.

I have no direct experience with Fearless cabs, but I've been using fEARfuls for over 5 years and Acmes before that. I prefer relatively flat response cabinets for two reasons:

  1. Versatility. I can go from modern to old school to blues/rock guitar-like sounds by changing EQ or kicking in a pedal.

  2. FOH. When I have PA support, I can send post EQ and be reasonably certain that the house and stage sounds are similar.

This/\ was the ultimate reason I went with a fEARful, I wanna know exactly what the FOH is getting....

I can't wait till things settle down for me financially so I can build 15 sub and a 15/6!!(edit: So I can ditch my Hartkes)

this is completely super excellent.

If you want to take full advantage of the F212's ability, you should run a pre/power amp rig.
I use a Demeter HPB-1 driving a Crown XTI-2002 to drive mine when I want a lot out of it. 2kw Bridged into 4ohms, admittedly Crown ratings are optimistic as they are at 1khz, but it's still got a lot of schnapps.
It sounds good with a Shuttle 9.0 or Puma 900, but the rack comes out when I want to make a statement.

The short answer is yes.
The devil is in the details though, and if by vibe you mean the general flavor. The most important word in that question was "quality".
So if you are looking at the JBL EON, QSC, Mackie, etc powered cabs, the answer would be not so much. You might get the flavor, but not the vibe. Maybe with a subwoofer, but even then it would depend.

Lol. I was thinking a (800W+) class D.
The whole point is to move away from my racks and 10's.

Yeah, these cabs need serious power (headroom) if you want to reach sonic nirvana. I'm currently using a 900 watt Puma with my F112 F115 stack. That's enough. But I'm using just the F115 more now, so that drops it down to an 8 ohm load, and the Puma drops to 600 watts. Still sounds incredible at 600 watts, don't get me wrong, but I'm in the process of purchasing a Crest Prolite 2.0 power amp which can put 1,200 watts into an 8 ohm cab in bridge mode. Yeah, it's a rack mount, but a CLASS D rack mount amp - so we are talking about 12 pounds. The F115 is only 42 pounds. With that combo I can knock people over if they get too close, thanks in large part to the Emminence high excursion 15LF speaker and the superior cabinet construction. It's a relatively light and portable equivalent of a much, much bigger and heavier cabinet/amp combo.

But for me what sets the GB Fearless cabs apart is perfect clarity of the low frequencies. This is huge. Especially with a 5 string bass. The end of muddy, undefined and/or boomy bass. In every venue I've played. In rooms where this was not previously possible. I stand out in the mix with punch and definition, even on a low B. First time I can really say that in the 35 years I've been playing bass.

Hopefully 800w will be enough to let it "sing" lol. The cab is rated at 1200w

Oh..It will sing, there's no doubt about it, I've used a Streamliner 900, Shuttle 9.0 and Puma 900 with an F212.
All of them did a great job.
My point was just that you won't reach its full potential. That said, it's not likely you would need it's full potential in any civilized situation.

Are you calling me uncivilized? :beaver:

And yes, I've experienced a Streamliner 900 and a Shuttlemax 9.2 and both seemed to have sufficient power to work with these cabs.
