I am thinking blueish or whitish tort for mine, but the mint does look really good. Hard choices, but as of now I am going with the free one!
Okay, so I've had my new Fender American Professional Jazz for a few months now, and while I love the way it plays. I'm let down by how it sounds. I'm strongly considering swapping out the pickups, and I'm open to suggestions. I'm leaning towards swapping out the neck pickup with Fender Custom Shop '62 P Bass Pickup (which can be had for around $120.00) and leaving the bridge pickup in place. Does anyone have any thoughts on this option (preferably constructive thoughts, beyond "why don't you just buy a precision bass"), like I said, I love the way it plays, just looking to improve the sound of this bass. Thanks much.
Once you put in whichever p pickup, the bass will no longer sound like a jazz bass with both pups on or the p solo'd. If you are okay with that, go out and swap.
The new V-Mod pickups have (to my ears) far less overall output than the 60s Custom Shop pickups in my 2012 Amaerican Standard Jazz. They're also much more dynamic, past a fault. They're so dynamic that the only time I truly get the more punchy sound that I'm looking is by playing super aggressively.
For a punchy sound you should go for a kind of overwound pickup.
If you are willing to spend a little more on a Jazz Bass pickup set, I would suggest having a look at O.C. Duff Pickups. Owen could make you a handwound set to your tonal specifications.

If you can make the alteration in non-destructive fashion, and have money to experiment, why not.

I heard a demo with the Jason Lollar Jazz Bass pickups and they sounded really good. Check them out on YouTube.
+1 Love my Lollar J's...Fralins are also great but it's really hard to beat Jason's pickups IMHO.

How do the necks on the Pro line Precision compare to the most recent years American Standard Precisions?
I just play a new P and J today ( I was demoing an amp). I still think my late model MIA standards sound better. The pro series, to my ears, is less classic and a touch modern. I wouldn't say clinical, but the warmth of a CS62 is hard to beat. Love the sonic grey though and the olive.
@todd0864, the AmPro Precision's neck is considerably chunkier than my '15 AmStd's. I like the feel of both of them, honestly, but they're quite different.
I really like the Pro series P I have. I have read some are comparing the output to other models and years. Its all personnel when it comes to sound. But louder does not mean better. Many engineers will tell you that raising the volume on a certain track some people may think its a different eq. Also keep in mind that some pickups have more winding for more output but you compensate the highs. Yet maybe changing the eq on the amp makes you like it better. Its all what you want in sound. Personally I really like the Pro P, it may be slightly different but all models sound a little different. I can tell you it records great.
I made a trip to Atlanta Bass gallery yesterday and tried out 4 different 5 string Jazz basses for a couple hours and in the end I purchased a Fender American Pro Jazz 5 with a maple neck in Sonic Grey. All the basses that I tried sounded nice (G&L JB5's and Fender Amer Pro Jazz V's) but in the end the Pro jazz V in Sonic Grey won out. It took a really low buss free set up, had a wonderful tone and weighed in at 7 lbs 12 ozs (much lighter than the others).
I really preferred the feel of the flatter C neck over the G&L JB5 neck. I also love the sound of the new pickups and the feel of the more narrow taller frets. Great sounding passive bass IMO.
It was also really nice to be able to try several basses and to select the pick of the litter (verses rolling the dice and taking what the online stores send).
IMO Fender has a winner with the new American Professional Jazz V.
